About the Author

J. Drew Lanham is a native of Edgefield, South Carolina, and an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University. Lanham is a birder, naturalist, and hunter-conservationist who has published essays and poetry in publications including Orion, Flycatcher, and Wilderness, and in several anthologies, including The Colors of Nature, State of the Heart, Bartram’s Living Legacy, and Carolina Writers at Home, among others. He and his family live in the Upstate of South Carolina, a soaring hawk’s downhill glide from the southern Appalachian escarpment that the Cherokee once called the Blue Wall.

This is a very heartfelt and moving book that covers the gamut from the author's childhood to the present. He describes what it was/is like living as the "rare bird" in the flock.As a white man, there is no way I can begin to put myself in the author's shoes as he describes the affect of seeing Confederate flags on cars, flying from houses, and in cemeteries. I will say this, though...living in Pennsyltucky, we have more than our share of Confederate flags, license plates, etc. on display. I never realized how many folks up here had such pride in their Southern roots--because that's what I understand it's all about. In any case, even I, as a white man, am uncomfortable in the small towns and rural areas where such displays are prominent.I am a nature lover and enjoyed very much the author's thoughts on birding, the land, etc. as he went through life. I highly recommend this book.

I am enjoying every page of this outstanding book. I grew up in a white suburban neighborhood in the segregated South. I find Drew Lanham's descriptions of his youth in a rural area so touching. I am envious of his childhood observations of nature.I love the concept of a sense of place. How does the place where you grew up affect you for the rest of your life. This book certainly provides Drew Lanham's amazing sense of place.Drew Lanham is a gifted writer and I appreciate his sharing of these deeply personal experiences.

This is a marvelous book, and I'm not just whistling Dixie. It's thoroughly entertaining, enriching, enlivening, and original. Composed of a series of beautifully honed and crafted stand-alone memoir pieces about Lanham's life growing up black in rural S.C., becoming a lover and preserver of nature (especially birds), and his journey to becoming a fully-realized person (he'd probably say " work-in-progress"), it's chock-full of pitch perfect details that pin one to the page. He's a fine writer, and from what I can tell, a fine human being. He's definitely one on whom nothing has been lost, and he has a singular talent in bringing his rich world--and self--to life.

From the very first page I was drawn into a world that felt so very familiar to my heart in many ways and yet so very different in other ways from the way I grew up not too far away from The Home Place. I wish I could have met Mamatha...sat in her house eating her butter biscuits and delicious treats, while asking her about her healing herbs and natural potions and her connection to "the other world". I cried as I read the "Life's Spring" chapter...cried not only because of the loss of your James Hoover Lanham... but the loss of his scared energy as he maintained the land and stresses as best he could. I could feel his strength, his love and also his pride as a father, a husband and a proud son, carrying on the family name.... And then to transition at spring right as everything was coming to life felt bitter sweet. New life and death...the circle of life.Truly I could feel every beautiful description as if I were there walking the land, listening to the birds, laying on my back looking at the star studded night, smelling the aromas of cooking and cleaning and flowers and fruit trees...all of it. And to feel the pain of prejudice through the ages... I found myself literally holding my breath during the descriptions of outings with questionable surroundings....and unfortunately feel and know that prejudice is still present today. It brought up for me the search and question that we all ask at some point in our life regardless of the color of our skin...Who are we? Why are we here? Where did we come from?Thank you for giving us a glimpse into the magic of your journey and the experiences of the Home Place and all of its ebb and flow. I look forward to reading more of your work in the near future!I highly recommend this to all.

Rachel Cooper is on a boat trip with her husband, Tom. A tragic accident causes her to lose her left hand. Following the amputation, Rachel begins to see nightmares about a woman trapped inside a hollow oak tree. She also experiences phantom sensations with her lost hand. The sensations and the nightmares feel real and she hears a voice saying "Not dead!"... Rachel doesn't know who the woman in her nightmares is, but she finds herself thinking about the mystery of the Oak Mary. She wants to finds out the truth about her, but there are dark and sinister forces at work, and Mary is in a world where she doesn't belong...This marks the beginning of a mesmerising story that gradually develops into a dark and unsettling tale of dark forces, mesmerising strangeness and urban myths.I was pleased with the characterisation, because the author has created a strong protagonist and writes well about the secondary characters. I loved the intensity of the dynamics between the characters, because the author emphasised all the right things in his story.Rachel Cooper is a realistic and three-dimensional protagonist who has to deal with the loss of a hand due to a tragic accident. Her way of coping with the loss is handled well, because she puts up a brave face and jokes about things, but knows that she is an amputee and will never get the hand back and her life will be forever different.I was thrilled to read about how Rachel thought that she might be losing her sanity, because she began to experience strange things that haunted her. All of the elements related to sanity and strange occurrences are fascinating, because the author manages to keep things believable, which is quite an achievement in dark fantasy.The author writes excellently about intimacy issues following an amputation, because Rachel notices that Tom doesn't want to touch her the way he used to before she lost her hand (Tom seems to avoid touching her and doesn't want to make love to her). This puts a strain on their relationship and complicates things between them.Relationships between family members are also handled well. I was captivated by how realistically the author wrote about Rachel's feelings towards Tom's family and how she interacted with her own mother, because her feelings felt justified and natural.It's great that the author doesn't shy away from sex and sexuality, but writes boldly about it. He writes surprisingly well about female sexuality, which is something that is not often seen in this kind of fiction.In my opinion, James Brogden is one of the few modern authors who write perfect dream sequences. As many readers are aware of, dream sequences can either be a good thing or an extremely bad thing when used in a wrong and annoying way. In this novel, dream sequences are an essential part of the story and work in favour of the story and enhance the overall atmosphere.I enjoyed reading about how the author explored what the truth behind the corpse in the tree is, because urban legends have sprung up around Oak Mary (people believed that Mary might have been a Nazi spy, a prostitute or a gypsy witch, because nobody knew the truth about her). The author offers his readers three glimpses into what kind of a person Mary has been and how she ends up inside the oak tree. Each of these glimpses is unsettlingly dark and they're all connected to each other in a macabre way.What happens between Rachel and Mary is captivating, because Mary has come back from the dead, but she doesn't belong in our world. The supernatural elements related to Mary's character and her existence are satisfyingly creepy, and the author's vision of the forces that are involved in Mary's fate is impressive. The author uses folklore elements to his advantage when writing about these elements and forces and he does it perfectly.Rachel's ability to reach through the barrier that separates the world of the living from the world of the dead is one of the most intriguing things about the story, because each time she reaches the umbra, it causes imbalances. The umbra is a place unlike our world, because there's dark power and there are dead things, but it's also much more than that. In fear of writing spoilers, I'll restrain myself from writing more about the umbra, but it's safe to say that reading about the umbra is intriguing and very rewarding.I enjoyed the ending of this novel, because the author has written a wholly satisfying ending to his story. It's been a while since I've seen such a good ending in this kind of a novel. I won't reveal what happens to Rachel and Mary, but I can mention that the events will please readers.I give this novel full five stars on the scale from one to five stars, because it's - without any kind of doubt - one of the best novels of the year. I find it difficult to believe that other dark fantasy novels will be able to surpass it in terms of storytelling, originality and characterisation, because it's so much better than anything that been recently written by other authors.James Brogden's The Hollow Tree is a brilliant British dark fantasy novel for readers who enjoy reading unsettling stories, because the story is something special and unique. It's a fresh and utterly compelling novel that should be on every horror fan's reading list. If you love dark and well written stories, you won't be disappointed by this novel.Highly recommended!

I had no idea what this book was about all I know about it was about a female that lost her hand in a tragic boating accident, and that's all that I know about this book. Imagine my surprise when I first read the first few chapters of this book that there were so much more about The Hollow Tree that meets the eye. I really don't want to go into any details about it because I don't want to get a spoiler, but I absolutely and thoroughly loved and enjoyed everything about The Hollow Tree. The beginning chapters did entrap me until the very end. The plotline and concept were really intriguing and to me very original I never read a book quite like this one before, and it was a very refreshing read for me as well. The writing style was very descriptive and flowed well and was on point that I wanted to read more and couldn't put this book down. The characters were well developed and complex of there own which I absolutely love every one of them, I especially love Rachel she was a really strong, kind, loyal and very smart woman. Rachel wouldn't stop to find out who truly was Oak Mary and learn about what actually happens to her or how she got put in the hollow oak tree and left there to die oh so many years ago. The villains in The Hollow Tree were psychotic and very cold-blooded that they gave me the creeps and the really didn't care about the consequences of there action. All and all I absolutely love and enjoy The Hollow Tree I can't wait to read more books by James Brogden in the near future!

Catholic Books Publishing used the same name and IBSN when they published the updated version in 2012. Hence, there is no real way to tell what version your getting when you buy this. Speaking for myself, I purchased two compete sets (Sunday, Weekday Volumes I & II) this year, once for myself and once as a gift. On both occasions, I purchased directly from Amazon and the current edition was shipped.Since the updated versions have been around for some years now, I feel it is highly unlikely that Amazon (itself) is shipping the old version. The same cannot be said for third parties, especially when purchasing a used version. And there are a lot of old version flying around as most ditched their old copies in 2011 when the changes took place.I would suggest therefore that you only buy a new copy, and that you buy either from the publisher or Amazon directly. If insist on buying from a third party, insist on verification before ordering that they are selling the 2012 version (if it is the Weekday Volume II) or 2011 version (if it is Sunday or Weekday Volume I).Pax

I have read this book for five consecutive days in a row for nap and night time. My son can not get enough. We love how George gets curious in this book about camping. We love to camp with him and pretend like we're roasting marshmallows too. We have had many learning experience just with this book. We talked about fire safety, how animals protect themselves, and how to camp. The pictures are beautifully illustrated bringing the reader on a whirlwind of causes and effects in the true Curious George way.

I said yes... he said THIS IS SMART... whoever wrote it is presenting you FUNDAMENTAL and important information in these concepts...I am really happy with this book so far (sitting at 88% complete) - so much so, that I will be purchasing his other successor piece - the one on Arrays and Objects shortly... purchase this ebook right now if you're at all interested... then proceed to review the concepts with mindfulness - from start to finish: make notes, practice code line by line; re-write them; then proceed to make your own additions based on your understanding as you evolve... To the author: you have done a great job - your material is robust and intuitive and well structured. Keep it coming.

Who knew an ebook that cost $2.99 would make JavaScript so palatable? The explanations are clear, and the lab work helps reinforce the concepts. This may sound like a simple statement, but it is surprisingly profound. I have tried nearly every method under the sun to learn JavaScript: Udemy courses (admittedly, some of them are good), other books, Code School, Skillcrush, etc., and this ebook trumps them all, as far as I'm concerned. I have been relentless in my pursuit to learn and master JavaScript since it's THE language you need to learn (HTML and CSS aside) if you want to become a web developer, and my long and frustrating journey ended when I bought this book. Reading JavaScript in Plain Language and going through the exercises gave me the foundation I needed to master the basics and move on to the intermediate level. I still have much more to learn, but you can believe that the author's followup book on arrays, objects, and functions will be at the center of my education. If you have struggled to learn JavaScript but haven't given up, do yourself a favor and get this book. I am grateful to the author for having written it, and I have had some fun with his side project books, too, on learning how to generate a string of numbers and work on inner.HTML. I would love to see more from this author: anything on the DOM, jQuery, or a deeper dive into Angular.

This book is just perfect for beginners, and Tony de Araujo is a great teacher. The strength of the book lays in it simplicity: you learn every concept quickly as it is indeed explained in plain language, then practice it in the Lab section at the end of every chapter. Samples are easy to do and are of great help to firmly grasp the theory behind the concepts. Before reading this book I knew nothing about Angular or JSON, and only a minimal of Javascript because I used it sparingly for simple tasks on web pages. After reading the book, I got a better understanding of some key aspects of Javascript and I feel I understand how JSON and Angular work, at least at an introductory level. Great read.

This is a very basic introduction to both JavaScript and AngularJS. It would be good for a newbie to JavaScript and does a nice job of a basic intro to AngularJS to interest the reader in that framework. Pleasant writing style. Unfortunately there are more than a few typos and errors that should be corrected. Minor distractions.As for AngularJS, checkout Zurb's Foundation for Apps framework which combines responsive Web design with Angular to create single page Web apps. Fun to work with an powerful. This book doesn't get you far enough for that framework.

I just completed Tony de Araujo's e-book JavaScript In Plain Language and thoroughly enjoyed every step of the journey. I found Tony's work via Codecademy's JavaScript tutorial help and decided to further dive down the rabbit hole and buy his Kindle books. I am so glad I did because his teaching style is very clear and well thought out. I found it helpful to work with three windows open simultaneously (each taking up 1/3 of the screen) with Kindle, text editor and browser. In summary, get this book, it's great.

Just like the title say, written in plain language, the best book for beginners. I wish I found Tony's books while I started learning web development. I am planning to buy more from this author and learn what I can from them, worth it. Easy book to read and there are labs after each section which is really helpful.

I am not a programmer at all. I am a fast learner who learns through a little bit of theory and a little bit of practice. With this book I was able to understand how JavaScript works to the point where it was possible for me to build a dynamic website to visually present JSON data coming from API's from multiple CDN's. I loved it! Very easy to read and follow. Would definitely recommend it for those with a curious mind.

As the Windows operating system has become more and more complex and those old easy to modify ini files have been replaced with the registry and it�s much more complex structure anyone who needs to tweak the Registry need a good book to study just how the Registry works. This book offers a very good overview of the Registry.The book covers common problems, common fixes, how to back it up (very important since a corrupted registry may cause your computer to not be able to start at all), how to restore it and how to backup and restore just certain branches of the registry. Making changes to the registry is not for the faint-hearted. Deleting a wrong key, changing the wrong key, or any other change can create havoc for your computer. The book describes things in sufficient detail to allow you to make changes with confidence and knowing that you can get back to the original registry if something goes wrong.I wish it had more information on how one could identify programs that a particular key is related to. Why? Because it is still very, very unusual to find a program that completely removes itself from the registry when you uninstall the program. These dead parts of the registry make it larger and larger and cause your computer to boot slower and slower and also create more and more places where there may be software conflicts or other items that cause your computer to crash. In the author�s defense I have not been able to find any computer books that cover this topic in any significant manner. So, it is still click and guess if you want to remove all the threads of a program in the registry.All in all, this is still an excellent book on the registry and a good choice for a computer technician, or the courageous novice, to have on their bookshelf.

Don't buy this book! If you're seriously looking at being able to find out about all of the registry line items available in Windows 2000 this isn't the book. The book is rated intermidiate to advanced. What?!?! It's a beginners book. I expect a book that is advertised at such levels to be like "Windows NT 4.0 Registery: A Professional Reference". Now that's a registry book!
