This is the most poorly-written textbook I have ever read. Since I bought it for a course I'm taking to change careers after having already received two previous four-year degrees, I've read a lot of them. It's poorly-written, confusing, repleat with unnecessary and unrelated extended metaphors, and contains numerous grammatical and even orthographical mistakes. Much fo the "text" is taken up with extended quotations of other authors or "adaptations" of other authors, and, when the author needs to take up more space, he fills numerous half pages with useless "diagrams" that tell the reader nothing that the text didn't already explain (except, perhaps, that the author bought some bargain-bin clipart CD-ROM back in 1993). For instance, to show what "stakeholders" means, he includes a random (and hideous) clipart sketch of a bunch of soulless people wearing 80's business wear sitting around a table. Yeah, thanks, that helped a lot. . . no, wait, it didn't.In short, the whole work has the feel of an essay written by a middle-schooler that needed to be a certain length, but for which the poor middle-schooler only had one page worth of useful information. So, he went back, padded the margins, rewored every single sentece to be as long as possible, added every redundant quotation he could thing of, added unnecessary and unhelpful analogies every other paragraph, and then, in desperation, filled up entire half pages with illustrations. . . seriously.The author (or, rather authors) of this book may know what they're doing in their work, but they clearly have no idea how to write about it.

It's also not a book on Capability Maturity Models (CMM), Class-Responsibilities-Collaborators (CRC) cards, Decision Representation Language (DRL), Extreme Programming (XP), Gantt charts, Issue-Based Information Systems (IBIS), Joint Appication Design (JAD), Key Process Areas (KPA), the Liskov Substitution Principle, Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectural styles, Nonfunctional Requirements (NFR) Frameworks, Object Design Documents (ODD), PERT charts, the Questions-Options-Criteria (QOC) model, Requirements Analysis Documents (RAD), Royce's methodology, Software Configuration Management Plans (SCMP), System Design Documents (SDD), Software Project Management Plans (SPMP), the Unified Software Development Process, User Manuals, V-Models, Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), or any of the myriad other tools introduced in the book.This IS a book to introduce newly-minted programmers to the kind of things, tools, and processes they can look forward to (with either anticipation or dread) in the real world of software development. As the authors state on page viii of the Preface:"We have observed that students are taught programming and software engineering techniques in isolation, often using small problems as examples. As a result, they are able to solve well-defined problems efficiently, but are overwhelmed by the complexity of their first real development experience, when many different techniques and tools need to be used and different people need to collaborate."It's been many years since I was involved in major software development projects (and those were all in the military). But, this book seems to have covered everything that all new programmers need to know so that they aren't simply lost when they enter their first software project. The readers certainly won't be experts in the things covered, but they'll at least have a good grounding and be able to bootstrap themselves from there (especially since the authors provide "Further Readings" and a Bibliography at the end of each chapter). For instance, on page 71, under Further Readings, they list three works on UML: one of which is the 566 page official specification, "OMG Unified Modeling Language Specification."Overall, this is an excellent book for anyone who is just entering the software development world. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5.As a side note, Florida State University (FSU) uses this book in its COP 3331: "Object-Oriented Analysis and Design" course.

When a book has a section at the back of every chapter called "Confusing Terms," what does that say about how well the book explains the material? No wonder information system design is a chaotic mess. With textbooks like these, I'm scared to see what the next generation of System developers will come up with.

This book was honestly one of the more confusing textbooks I've read. The definitions were unclear and relied too much on assumed knowledge. Moreover, the diagrams were never well explained and the authors took too long to make a point. When your chapter sub-headings need a tl;dr to make a point, you know that you have a problem. The book also fails to recognize Agile management style, opting to only write ONE paragraph about it then move back into waterfall.Poorly written book. Find either an online resource (IBM has free documentation on their website) or a book written in more concise language.

This is the most painful book I have ever had to read. It drones on and on in circles rather than getting to the point. Pretty much every chapter has multiple instances where the book takes multiple paragraphs to convey a point that can be made in 3 sentences or less. This book wouldn't be worth the price tag at 25% of its cost. If it were not for a class I would return it promptly. Alas, I am stuck with it.

This was THE worst textbook I ever had to read for a class. It's too wordy, explanations have no point (and make no damn sense)... even the outlines and review questions/answers are horrible. A few of the test questions refer to examples in the book... which is terrible (how can we remember every detail from the book during a TEST.. without any references?!?!)It was really frustrating to read this book for a class that I had high interest in.

We have various copies of this book in our offices - its a great book for software engineering and a must read for any software engineer, computer scientist or project manager. The material is thick and dives deep into the topic - but very much well worth it.

I'm just finishing up my third year of doctoral training in a clinical psychology program. I have been working at a university counseling center and since we also do disability accommodations, I found myself occasionally in a position of needing to do very quick, provisional diagnoses. My last clinical supervisor recommended the previous version of this book (DSM-IV-TR) for me because it was on her shelf, but she told me she was certain they'd made a DSM-5 version. I used it and it's absolutely fantastic for what I need to do, so I ordered the DSM-5 version. I haven't used the MSE stuff yet and don't need to at this particular site, but in any case where it's necessary to go through the diagnostic criteria of DSM-5 diagnoses and write up provisional diagnoses, this is perfect.PROS: The questions aren't super leading, can be adapted based on your clinical judgment, and using a book like this can sometimes be non-stigmatizing and collaborative which can be good for rapport. Rather than being an opaque "expert" who is judging every little thing a client does or says and coming to conclusions using a process that the client can't really access, you can sit down with them and go through the diagnostic criteria one by one and see what they say to each. You can adapt the level of opaqueness based on client needs and personality.Obviously there are limitations to the interview questions in the book, but I feel that clinicians would be well aware of this. Just to be thorough, first, this is probably best for provisional diagnoses - if I'm in a clinical relationship for longer than a session or two, I'm going to want to confirm, test, re-test, do rule-outs, do differential stuff, etc.Secondly, you're not going to be able to diagnose personality disorders with this (or really anything formerly Axis II, or requiring a specialist to diagnose), nor should you. Again, a clinician should know this so I don't think anyone interested in this book will have a major problem with that.Third, you need to use your clinical judgment when diagnosing, e.g., consider other evidence, use assessment data, consider secondary gains. You also need to use clinical judgment with the wording of the questions. Once again, clinicians with functioning brains know this so I'm preaching to the choir here. But the point is, don't become overly reliant on the book and know the major diagnoses and symptoms before going into it and you'll be fine.Fourth, if for some reason you're not a clinician and you want to get this book to "diagnose" yourself or your friends for funsies, you really shouldn't. Given the limitations I've mentioned above, a book like this only makes sense in the hands of a skilled and knowledgeable clinician who can use the information gathered as part of a holistic diagnostic process. If you feel like you have a mental health diagnosis that is functionally impairing your life, seek help from a professional.In short, if you are a good clinician (counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist) and know the limitations of the book, it becomes a remarkable tool in your hands. Slips easily into a briefcase or pocket, crazy cheap considering how expensive books are, and invaluable for thoroughly reviewing diagnostic criteria and providing ways to position questions to clients if you're worried about stigmatizing or offending them.

I am a psychiatry resident, and I find this book very practical when I'm interviewing patients/completing paperwork. It isn't a pocket DSM-V; you need to be familiar with the criteria to begin with, and it doesn't quite delve into all diagnoses, but it does give a thorough review of the key features to assess when evaluating psychiatric patients for particular disorders. In addition, it provides ways of asking the questions. I keep a copy of this book in my office and also in my call bag. It's small-size really is pocket-sized, and I often will go to see patients with a notebook & pen in my hands and this book in my back pocket. I plan on buying a copy for all the interns next year.

This book is perfect for the workplace. I read too many reviews whining about the size of the book and the font size. First, the size of this $10 paperback is in the description so these are just careless consumers. Second, I had no trouble with the font. Maybe a pair of eyeglasses for these folks are needed. Anyway, I find the size great for the workplace especially if you're in a busy agency and need to take it with you somewhere. I ordered it after I saw a colleague with it in his hands. He carries it with him at all times and expressed how useful it is. I enjoyed reading the interview questions, it expands on areas you may not have thought of and helps you to develop new ways to address symptoms with a client. I don't think you can beat the value, content, and I dare say size for this book. If you're looking for a condensed version of the DSMV they make it. This is not it. Know what you're buying before you complain. It's an interview guide to help you askip the right types of questions to assist with your diagnosis. It also generously provides diagnostic criteria so I can't see where the complaints are. You're definitely getting some bang for your buck.

I recommend this guide for students and new counselors. It is a great aid when learning to interview clients. I kept this handy while interning. I had the previous version and now the V. Never leave home without it.

This book is essential as a student PMHNP, and for anyone wanting a quick understanding of the DSM-V characteristics of some of the more common psychiatric disorders. It doesn't replace the big purple book, but it does make it much less intimidating.

This is the best book for training therapists. We purchased several copies as parting gifts for our MSW interns. I used it all year in training an supervision and wanted them to have it as they continue in their career development. Helpful for differential diagnosis and assessment. Very happy with this book. As a psychiatric trainee, this book offers some excellent ways to ask questions that perhaps aren't the easiest to get at. The organization follows that of the DSM, making things easy to look up. Totally worth the money. I love the Sutras and this is a great resource! Its so well packaged and quite beautiful to look at, let alone study.

Each element of the set can be studied separately or together and come home to nest neatly within the main box. Form & function are excellent and ideal for use, storage, transport and even as art to be kept out in a room and invite exploration for many years to come. For what all you get and compared to costs associated with workshops and classes, the price is a bargain! This you can unfold again and again.The Yoga Sutras are revealed as 51 terms/concepts that are important to a deep understanding of what yoga really is. Each concept has a card with thoughts related to it, a lecture on one of the CDs, and a full commentary in the workbook about that concept. For easy and practical reference - included is a full translation with literal translation, simplified translation, original Sanskrit including transliteration, individual word meanings and sutra meanings of each divine thread. I highly recommend this "essential guide to the heart of yoga philosophy". It's perfect for anyone interested in or teaching yoga.

this is a clear, easy to understand instruction on the yoga sutras,by listening to the CDs in your automobile, and reading the book athome the guide provides a beginning approach to the Sutras. the flashcards were a bit of an overkill, but OK.

Great Package. 7 CD's, Flash Cards, Fantastic Work Book. No matter which translation of the Yoga Sutras you like best, you need this one if you are serious student of Patanjali. This teaches you the Sanskrit needed to fully understand the subtle differences in how each translation is approaced. There are great tools, charts, diagrams, and guides to assist in truly appreciating a spiritual master piece. The tools to learn, understand and appreciate Sanskrit are extremely well done. Author approaches the work from the perspective that to understand the historical basis of the Yoga Sutras, how they were taught, learned (oral recitation), and passed on from teacher to student is rooted in the very language they are shared in. A key part of learning in this tradition is to actually chant or say the Sutra in the original language, Sanskrit. Speaking the Sutra is a key part if the learning process. The root sounds from Sanskrit modify and entrain the mind of the student with the seed sounds that are spoken in such a way that knowledge is revealed or perceived directly. In a sense that true depth of the Sutra's (or any Sanskrit text) cannot be fully understoond or grasped or known unless the tones can be experienced. From my reading of this text at least this is what I understand and it has a sense and feeling of accuracy and truth. I suspect the same is true for the original text from any religion. Many languages do not translate directly or easily to English. The author has done an amazing job in providing all tools necessary to dive deeply into the Yoga Sutras in a way I have not seen before.

About the Author

Tom Holmes has a PhD in Counseling Psychology and is Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University (WMU). He has been training graduate students in psychotherapy since 1985 and since 1996 he has been teaching in the Holistic Health Care Program at WMU. His specialty area is spirituality and the therapeutic process. Tom received training in IFS from Richard Schwartz in the late 1980's and has been teaching, training and practicing IFS since that time. In recent years his focus has been on burnout prevention: "Healing the Healer" and "Tuning the Heart of the Healer." His workshops integrate Western psychology with Buddhist psychology and the Sufi path of the heart as well as spiritual teachings from Christianity, Judaism, and Taoism. In addition to his teaching at the University he has offered many seminars in the US and Europe on the integration of IFS and spirituality as a resource for therapist burnout prevention and the development of therapeutic conditions.

This type of therapeutic approach to having a balanced mind seems a bit ridiculous when you first read about it.I felt a bit silly "talking" to my parts but having a mental conversation with the aspects of our personality (our "parts") during times of stress, or even when we are contemplating our life choices or making professional decisions really helps clarify and balance the whole thought process.Techniques are easily implemented into daily cognitive approaches and practice.

This book is my life!!!! Love it and always refer back to it on a daily basis

The premise of the book is sound by my observation and it helps greatly in understanding people around me, and myself. Useful when making "hard decisions".

This book was recommended to me after I had expressed interest in the Internal Family System work. It is indeed really worthwhile to read and reread it, because it contains so much information presented in an easily understandable way.The one quibble I have with this book compared to Jay Earley's Self-therapy is that Holmes keeps repeating that it is difficult and/or impossible to work on your own with this system while Earley obviously takes the position that it is very well possible to do this work on your own or with a buddy, not necessarily with an IFS therapist if the situation isn't too dramatic.Personally I am not really fond of Sharon Eckstein's drawing style, but the illustrations support the text in a wonderful way nevertheless.Reading Holmes and Earley both together gave me an even broader introduction to this wonderful parts work. It is my intention to keep studying in this direction.

My counselor uses the IFS model and recommended this book. It really helps me understand the counseling model she is using and visualize the “parts”.

I have been doing Parts Work for about a year now. This book makes the work easier to understand. The illustrations bring the Parts to life and solidify what I've experienced so far. Parts Work is amazing and has helped me in a way no other type of therapy could.

I am a lay person under a counselor who has practiced what this book teaches for 12 years. I see her for anxiety and depression and have never been disappointed in a session. She told me to buy this book after our second session and although I have to wade thru it's depths I don't regret it. To be truthful it is so deep I am reading over the first and second chapter for the third time underlining what I understand and don't understand so my counselor can answer my questions. If you aren't under a counselor that practices the "Art of Parts" by Tom Holmes this book won't do you any good. You need a counselor who practices this way. I have grown, and healed, and am a much stronger person because of this book and what it addresses from your childhood. I am a born again, spirit filled Christian and still recommend this book there is no witchcraft or "woo woo magic" in it.

Although most facts are presented accurately, the tone and perspective given in this book are negative and critical of human beings living in this country. He might have chosen to shock readers in order to achieve more interest. There are inaccuracies (I never heard that people eat piranha soup in Paraguay, for example. Lido restaurant serves its popular surubi soup!) and most facts are told to enhance and radicalize this warm hearted country. One can paint any kind of picture (with the good and bad) of any country's history, and this author used his darker side to enhance the bad in order to degrade it. Many Paraguayans welcomed the author with hospitality and he returned a slap on their faces.

Paraguay prides itself on being a country of "lace and legend". Strange, bizarre things occur almost daily and things that are readily accepted by the Paraguayans cause most Americans and Europeans to scratch their heads in amazement. I continue to contend that this is mostly because modern day Paraguay's culture and people and politics are based on the influence of the Guarani language that most people, even immigrants, speak. Most of us observe the Paraguayan's activities and events from a Euro-centric point of view that limits our understanding of the Paraguayan mind set and acceptance of things that causes our brains to short circuit sometimes. Those of you married into a Paraguayan family will lovingly appreciate the classification. The rest will just have to imagine the pleasure, shock and joy one experiences in the Paraguayan culture. This book is a good introduction for you.The author does a great job summarizing Paraguay's history and politics from "El Supremo" through relatively recent times. If you only want to read one book on Paraguay's history, then this is the one for you as it contains a summary of the Triple Alliance War (Paraguay versus Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) as the author visited many of the main battle sites and the Chaco War fought against Bolivia. Plus it touches on the revolution, Stroessner, Rodriguez and many of the other main political persons from recent times. You could use this book as your main information source for a college paper, or even a Master's Thesis.The author's observations will offend every one and no one as they are mostly spot-on and have little to no political-correctness restrictions. This book will cause laughter, amazement, anger, disgust, consternation, dumfoundedness and spark a general desire to visit Paraguay again, and again. The other reviews here do a good job of discussing the book's contents so I won't repeat it.If you want a good read with a little of everything included (murder, crime, romance, sex, business, trade, culture, etc.) then this should be the book for you.

I read this book prior to a visit to Paraguay. It was most enlightening and enabled me to act as a tour guide in a country where there are no tour guides. The book seems surrealistic until you get there, then it makes perfect sense. One of my favorite stories is the tale of "The Opera Singer", one of Stroessner's henchmen who would sing arias while torturing his victims. The country is great, bring along your Spanish, little English is spoken there.

I found this book very entertaining and enjoyable to read, but the writing style and the editing are a little unconventional, to say the least. The author jumps around a lot and the only thing that might give a clue as to the order of the jumbled historical information presented, is the sequence of the author's travels throughout the country. I say "might" because this is implied, rather than stated anywhere.That said, the author gets across his point that Paraguay is a fascinating country, with lots of colorful and unconventional figures in its past. I learned a lot about the history of the nation, what it might be like to live there and some of the interesting things it contains. I was also entertained by many the interesting anecdotes, both historical and biographical. What more could you want from a travel book?

j.Gimlette is one of the most well informed "travel" writers on Latin America. I know the history of these regions very well ( I am a devote of his other book, "On the Wild coast" about the guianas. Yes there are plenty of personal anecdotes, but there is also alot o historical framing so while at first blush his analysis seems steeped in exotica. in fact, its not: its the magical realism of some of these places, and also he doesn't flinch from their often gaspingly brutal histories that have produced the absurdities and tragedies that now unfold there. His prose is elegant, often he breaks your heart. But he has bothered to explore the deeper dimesnions of these places, so while at first blush it seems, as they say a "romp", he describes a terrible logic the really of which affects him profoundly.

This is one of the most extraordinary histories/adventure tales/personal journals I have ever read. I learned a great deal while balancing between shock and black comedy. For fans of Flashman, this is a great read. For others, it is an equally great read.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay for 27 months so that made me interested in this book. It covers what made me love Paraguay even in the rare moments I hated it. It's not a travel guide (nor does it claim to be) but it does talk about various historic landmarks and events and relates them to the significance for the development of the nation's psyche. If you are planning on visiting Paraguay I'd strongly recommend this book in addition to whatever travel guide you choose.

This author gives an interesting commentary on the various experiences of traveling in Paraguay. I enjoyed his colorful descriptions and apt turns of phrase.

*Starred Review* Gr. 8-12. As in Frank O. Gehry, Outside In (2000), the authors once again make challenging art accessible and exciting to teen readers. This time they focus on Louise Bourgeois, one of the best-known living sculptors, whose work deals with primal themes of jealousy, betrayal, and shifting sexual identities, which, according to Bourgeois are inspired by her painful childhood and her adulterous father. In clear, elegant prose, bolstered with numerous quotes from the artist, the authors seamlessly juxtapose stories of Bourgeois' life with relevant artworks, which are often explained in the artist's own words. Beautifully reproduced photographs, printed on well-designed pages, offer an excellent mix of the artist's personal life and her art, though the authors remind readers that "we don't have to know her story to have our own strong reaction," to her work. By showing the relationship among shapes, colors, materials, and emotions, the authors invite readers to approach even the most bewildering art with confidence and think about it in their own words. First I saw her arts at Glenstone. I love her works. Every her book is expensive even if they are secondhand. This is the simplest version about knowing her. Thank you. She is a complicated artist psychologically, but her keen eye finds what we miss in usual life and sometimes her expressions are so comical.

I loved all the pictures the book had of Louise Bourgeois art work. Easily understandable for younger kids but entertaining for adults as well. Buy it, you will love it.

As you read RUNAWAY GIRL, a beautifully-crafted book that illuminates Louise Bourgeois's story, it is impossible not to keep your eyes on the art. The book is absolutely saturated with vivid photographs of the ninety-two year-old artist's work, as well as a progression of photos of Louise throughout a life that spanned nearly the entire twentieth century and has continued on into the new millennium. Louise's story--from a childhood in France to an apartment in Manhattan--encompasses family, creativity, and personal evolution, as well as her historic role in breaking down sexual barriers in the art world.But what makes RUNAWAY GIRL such an important piece of nonfiction for young adults is that unique peek at the psychological roots of an artist's creativity. Greenberg & Jordan provide the perfect measure of Louise's early years in order for us to understand those roots without ever getting bogged down in extraneous detail. The extensive access to her inner life that this controversial artist has granted the authors and their readers makes the book inspiring and unique. I didn't expect to enjoy a book about some female artist I'd never heard of before, but to find out why some two-story-high spiders represent her mother and herself totally captivated me."From one of Louise Bourgeois's journals:The Runaway Girl who never grew up.I need no support nor comfort.I need no safety net, no breakfast.No lunch or tea, no visitors, no telephone calls nor little messages.No little concerts, no hype, or encouragement for big projects.No ambitions, no spying on my neighbors.I need nothing...I can wait, I am not afraid, I am an adult.Nothing is lacking."It is also fascinating to see little snippets of the artist at work. For instance, the authors describe her creation of one of my favorite pieces of her art:"She would go back to [the marble quarries in] Pietranta many times in the sixties and again in the eighties. Jerry Gorovoy, who accompanied her on one such trip, says there wasn't much time for sightseeing. They arrived at their hotel in the evening and instead of going to a restaurant or walking around town, she insisted on getting right to work. Jerry says that Louise had a hard time relaxing. 'If you take her to the beach, she can sit still for about five minutes. Then she gets restless.' Unfortunately, Louise hadn't packed any art supplies--no clay, wax or Plasticine. So she asked Jerry for the shirt off his back. She folded and shaped it, stitching the cotton into position until she was satisfied with the form. The next day at the quarry she changed the design somewhat, then applied gesso, a liquid plaster, to harden the fabric. A larger, marble version was measured and roughed out by the craftsmen at the quarry according to her specifications. Then it was shipped to the studio [in Brooklyn], where, upon her return, she carefully reworked it with a chisel. Eventually Jerry's shirt evolved into Femme Maison, 1983, a fresh interpretation of her familiar subject."RUNAWAY GIRL concludes with a variety of useful resources, including "How to Look at a Sculpture," and "Where to View Artwork by Louise Bourgeois," as well as an expansive glossary, a bibliography, and a chronological listing of her work."
