Marianne M. Jennings, J.D., Emeritus Professor of Legal and Ethical Studies, has taught at the WP Carey School of Business, Arizona State University since 1977. She was director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics from 1995 to 1999. Ms. Jennings has worked with government agencies, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 100 companies on ethics training and culture. She is a contributing editor of the Accounting and Compliance Alert and the Real Estate Law Journal. Two of her books have been named Library Journal's book of the year. Her books have been translated into three languages. Her book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, published by St Martin's Press, has been used as an audit tool and a primer by numerous organizations for creating and sustaining an ethical culture. In 2011, Ms. Jennings was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders by Trust Across America and in 2012, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics by Ethisphere magazine. Ms. Jennings served on the board of directors for Arizona Public Service (now Pinnacle West) who owned the Palo Verde Nuclear Station from 1987 through 2000. She has served on INPO's advisory council since 2005. In 2015, she was named an affiliated scholar with the Center for the Study of Economic Liberty at Arizona State University. This text is teaching me, I'm enrolled in an online program and my professor is barely interacting - ironic since it's a course on ethics. The text is well written and case studies are abundant and disbursed thru the readings. The case studies are relevant and recent, helps to understand ethic policies in today's market.

Yes, we all know how challenging it can be to find the appropriate gear... After the third time I read that analogy, I started to lose respect for the authors and editors.Also, when you are providing a book of this type, I cannot overemphasize the benefit of using table/chart/etc. to communicate certain points... If you are delivering a training plan, illustrating it in a chart provides your reader the ability to digest the whole as opposed to continually flipping pages.... Also, as you are describing workout, including pace/timing/etc., use concrete and discrete language... What is a mini-set? Do mini-sets make up big/full sets? How much rest between efforts? What is the measure to determine how long that rest between efforts should be?I believe there is some fantastic content in this book... It is unfortunate that the reader has to re-edit it to unlock the value.

The content is good here. There is a good bit of information that is documented and accurate. No doubt that if you can follow this disorganized mess, you can develop a good workout that will benefit you on the bike. But, this is the most disorganized text I've read in a long time. The editor should find another line of work and the author would do well to find another person to edit this body of information. If I did recommend this to anyone, I would do so with one huge caveat - you CAN glean some good information about a weightlifting plan for cycling, but be prepared to do a bit of a workout making sense of this books bizarre and unhelpful method of organization. It defies logic. (curious that "Bicycling" magazine would lend its name to this text - but, of course, that rag is little more than a shill for the bicycle industry)

This book has some very good information in it. But you have to read through dozens of poorly written pages and repetitive crap to get to it. I've never seen a book so poorly written and edited that had such good nuggets of information in it.I boiled down what he was saying into a few sets of workouts and it is definitely having a positive impact on my cycling. It's also very hard -- as it should be. Especially the first few weeks.If only they had added some tables and charts and used a lot less words. As it is, I think this book rated a pamphlet of about 20 pages not this entire book. I'll use the information but I won't embarrass myself by crediting this book or recommending it. I'll just tell people how the workouts. I'd recommend finding a used copy and saving a lot of cash..

As the title suggests, this is not a book for casual training. It's not written for everyone and the negative review here reflect that. Not everyone is going to be able to use it as intended. This book doesn't stand on its own for complete strength training for cyclists. It won't give you the skills and knowledge learned from experience, several sessions of personal training, or a coaching program.That being said, this is a GREAT BOOK on strength training!! ...as long as you have some background knowledge and skill, or are willing to hire some help.And by that I don't mean it will only benefit racers or seasoned pros. The strength training contained in these pages will benefit anyone, even seniors just looking to stay active on a bike. But no matter who you are, you'll need a few years of cycling and strength training under your belt to be able to digest everything and incorporate it into your training. Or you'll need some additional guidance.For example, there are some seemingly contradictory statements, like this one:"The idea here is to get the body used to performing at APO for as long as possible without going to failure. That replicates what happens on a hard bike effort: You push hard, but at a sustainable pace. If you slip into failure, your ride is over; you’re wasted and can’t recover quickly enough to keep up with the peloton. The only time you want to go to failure is at the finish line."Then in the very next paragraph:"Once you establish your 6-reps-to-failure weight..."The author is often prescribing exercises done with enough weight to take you to failure on a number of reps, while simultaneously preaching about NOT going to failure. It's easy to read that and be confused. Like I said, an experienced athlete who rides and lifts will understand how far to take these, what the goals are, and how to do them for max effect. You'll have to read the whole book, not just cherry-pick programs, and you'll have to write it out into a plan that makes sense to you. But all the info is there. And it works.I was already doing a lot of these exercises and even using some of the periodization techniques, but not to the extent as outlined here. Now, having read the full book, I can see the genius in these protocols, and have re-written my winter training as a result.With just a few more charts or better-written explanations of specific workout schedules, this would get 5 stars, easily. I should probably give it 5 stars as is, but am a little annoyed that such a smart author didn't spend a bit more time on visual design clarity.It's a great book for trainers, coaches, and experienced cyclists. Just don't pick this up looking for a quick, easy-to-implement, training program. Think of it as a supplement. It doesn't replace a good coaching program, but it definitely holds its value for those who've already been through a few seasons of smart, organized training, and are looking for next-level strength training.Wallack, Roy; Jacques DeVore. I started this workout this week and initially had some questions with some of the direction provided by the authors. I happened across Jacques DeVore's email in another thread and reached out directly to him with some questions. He responded back the very next day and we sat on the phone for 30 minutes talking about the process and Jacques answering the questions that I had about the process.My background is cyclist by way of rock climbing and crossfit. Jacques and Roy break down the relationship between power and strength and help explain how to maximize performance through weight training in addition to cycling training. It's too early for me to provide any before and afters, but the science is solid and I can see the difference weights made in other sports. This should be no different. Even one week in, I can feel the difference on the indoor trainer.I'd definitely suggest this book for your off-season training. Great for my chess loving son!

Had this book when I was a kid. Wanted to have it again

My kids use this book along with a chess board I bought.

I bought the book for my 6 yo nephew. He loves it and was able to immediately follow the pictures and diagrams even though he wasn't able to read it yet. Actually, I had several adults that wanted it also, so I had to order several more. The adults liked that the directions were easy to read and understand.

Was a gift.

He and his friends all love this book. It is super good for Chess beginners, not only kids! Very vivid and fun!

This was a great books for my 1st grade students. Given I've already taught them all the values, moves, and how to win a game the book did get a little more in depth. Fun pictures and short explanations help a lot when explaining strengths of pieces and things. It did go over all the chess basics but could have given more examples and maybe a puzzle here or there to help w/ training.

I read the entire book before giving to our grandson, who plays chest with his daddy. I learned so much about moves and the identification of each piece. Our grandson loved it also.

On time. Good quality. Poor reading.

The hadith was lost in the mail Mashallah, but I was sent another one right away. It is in very good condition. I have one like this already but the pages keeps falling out and I noticed other people have the same problem. I ordered a new one because of that, but this one seems stronger than the ones im used to... like it'll last longer without pages falling out. I am happy with it.

This book is a concise introduction to the Islamic tradition of "Hadith", or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad regarding Islam. The book is suitable for the reader unfamiliar with Islam as well as the more informed reader. My only criticism is that without explanatory footnotes, some of the more allegorical sayings may not convey much to the lay reader. Still, if you would like an insight to some of the basic teachings of Islam and if you are willing to reflect for a moment on the sayings included, I'm sure you will enjoy this book

I don't have much problem with the actual content of the collection - it has what I expected. My problem with the book is it's an exceptionally poor quality print - the book is new and yet the text looks faded and in some cases practically disappeared! Very disappointing. If you can find this cheap and with good print, sure, but I wouldn't purchase online unless you just don't care.

I'm trying to alternate between fun audiobooks and ones that I feel I should read rather than having any desire to do so. Plato's Republic was in that second group. I honestly expected to hate it. But it's one of the fundamental classics. So on the list it goes to listen to while I commute. And I loved it. It may have been that it was a full cast audio but it honestly did feel like being with a group. Maybe a quarter of the way in I realized what it reminded me of: when you are at a very mellow party in college and people start discussing things that are really "deep, man." And there's that one person who is way too into it and dominates the conversation. So that tickled me most of the book. The other thing that was really engaging was how much of the ideas in this book can be seen in the modern world. In that way it made it feel like an anthropological study and it kept making me say, "neat," even when I disagreed with whatever point was being made. Overall I would recommend this audiobook version because it made it come alive.

Whew, that was an intense read! I gave five stars because after careful consideration I realized that Alan Blooms interpretive essay really helped me to understand the The Republic to a different degree. The first ten books are the shoes, the interpretive essay is the shoe lace and it ties all of it up very neatly. To read something over 2,000 years old that’s been translated from Ancient Greek is a task in itself, I commend this translations interpreter he did a stellar job. This book is Heavy and not a book you can just pick up and expect to read in a weekend, its not littered with images that create a perfect picture for you to burn thru, it’s page after page after page of thought, so it slows you down, a lot. Each page forces you to think about what you’re reading, sometimes you have ZERO Idea and that’s ok, that’s where Bloom’s Interpretive Essay comes in. To pick up this book and commit to finishing it is a Challenge I highly recommend, you’ll walk away a better person with a sense of accomplishment and more thoughtful mind. I’ve read over 200 books and I think it’s safe to say that this was the most challenging book I’ve ever put my mind too, if your looking for a challenge then you’ve found it. Happy reading 📖

While the book was written in 380 BCE it is, perhaps, more relevant today than at any time in its history. Socrates believed: “by curing people of the hubris of thinking they know when they do not…makes them happier and more virtuous than anything else.”Socrates and his friends pursue this journey by defining the ideal city – Kallipolis—and its rulers and constitution, the idea being that truth is often easier to discern on a large scale (i.e. a city) that can then be applied on a smaller scale (i.e. the individual).The debate focuses on the four virtues of an ideal city—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. And results in the conclusion that the human soul is made up of three parts—the appetitive, spirited, and rational—and that virtue, ultimately proven to be the source of happiness exists when the three are in balance and harmony.Socrates ultimately defines five political/economic models—philosopher/king, timocracy, oligopoly, democracy, and tyranny. And he ranks them, from good to bad, in the order listed, essentially arguing that they form an inverse ladder in which one inevitably deteriorates into the latter.That means, in essence, that oligopoly inevitably deteriorates into democracy, which he clearly doesn’t not hold in very high esteem. Freedom, by his logic, is unsustainable. In the simplest terms, the unfettered pursuit of freedom by everyone ultimately leads to conflict and that, in turn, inevitably leads to a race for power defined by manipulation, deception, and injustice.As a result, democracy inevitably leads to tyranny as the ruling class preys—quite deceitfully—on the fears of the masses that they, the masses, are being sidelined and their interests ignored. Sound familiar?The elenctic, commonly known as the Socratic method, has been largely stripped from our political and academic discourse. People are sure of what they know and don’t want to know anything else. The thirst for victory has, as a result, crushed the thirst for knowledge.There are many reasons for this. Technology, which gave rise to the echo chamber, has certainly contributed. Impatience has also played a big role. Elenctic takes time and our collective attention spans have dwindled to near nothing. Education, I believe Plato would say, however, is probably the real culprit. Oppression, sheltering, and victimization have replaced Plato’s definition of the ideal education: physical training, musical training (including prose and speech), mathematics, and dialectic.On the surface, critics will find no shortage of targets in the logic. More than anything else, however, both the argument and any criticism that might be drawn, reflect the imprecision of language itself and the difficultly this presents for philosophers willing to tackle the biggest and most relevant issues of life.That, however, simply reinforces Plato’s encouragement to ask more questions, listen more attentively with an open mind, and never assume you know the real answer. Which is why his ultimate encouragement it seems to me is not to admire things that are beautiful or just, but to truly understand what beauty and justice are. Sadly, I can think of no leader today who is doing anything even remotely close to that.Read it. It will make you a better leader, citizen, parent, friend, and person.

Plato’s Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: Res Publica) was written in 380 BC and this version was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871. It is a fiction book in the format of a discussion between Socrates and others. It aims to debate and conclusively determine the meaning of Justice. Socrates, the main character, was a Greek philosopher and the mentor of Plato. His philosophy is the basis and origin of the western philosophy. As a high schooler who often debates similar ideals and questions, I found this book to be very eye-opening and fascinating. Socrates doctrine proves itself true even in this day in age. That just goes to show, when it comes to ideals and behavior, humans haven’t changed very much. Republic is very well written and even after thousands of years it still captures its audience with its provoking revelations and relatable content. If you often find yourself debating similar questions then you might just find your answers here, but if you dislike philosophy or are set in your ways you probably will not find this book to be interesting. For me, this book was an enjoyable challenge and I definitely would read it again.

This Kindle edition is not as advertised and entirely useless. First and foremost, it is absolutely not an annotated edition; there is not a single note anywhere in the text. For that matter, there are no Stephanus numbers—the universal page numbers for all editions of Plato—so you will never be able to either cite this edition or find anything referred to by other writers. I'm not even sure that this is the Reeves/Grube translation, as there is no publication information whatsoever. Avoid this like the Athenian plague.
