Great book for our Hockey Papa!

This is an impressive book that will greatly improve anyone's understanding of hockey. Some of the biggest unanswered questions in hockey analytics are addressed here, for the first time in print. What is interesting to note is that for an analytics book, there barely any math at all in this book, and anyone can read it. Although I think casual hockey fans who are not into the analytics craze will be turned off by the title, they shouldn't be as I think they would like the book as well.I have never played or coached hockey but I do gamble on it professionally using statistical models. This book was a huge help to me and I was able to make a big improvement to how I modeled and bet hockey using a couple of the concepts in this book - concepts that I have never seen discussed anywhere else. For me the book has paid for itself thousands of times over already and if you like to bet hockey or play fantasy hockey, this book will be valuable even if it doesn't contain any information specifically devoted to those topics.The only thing I would change is that the authors refer too often to other sports such as basketball and soccer. I think that is probably because they have an extensive background in basketball analytics, and their basketball analytics book is great as well. I am not sure all the same concepts really apply to hockey and even if they do, one or two mentions would have been enough.

This is an important topic. I learned about this book from strategy blogger Theodore Kinni, who mentioned this book on his blog Reading Writing Management and in a longer article at INC.Complicated problems are big, but can be successfully broken down (e.g. how to build a reliable electric car). Once they are solved they stay solved. Nason and Kinni define "complex" problems as squirrelly ones that are full of paradoxes that don't resolve. Frankly, this topic is pretty well known under the heading of "WICKED PROBLEMS" and there are at least a half dozen books using that keyword as an entry point. So I would say that the basic difference between "complicated" and "complex aka wicked' problems is hardly brand new, but it is always nice to see a fresh treatment and fresh perspective on it. (This book by Nason does make a couple shout-outs to the older term wicked problems.) The most important thing - which Nason takes as his launch point - is to know WHETHER you are dealing with a complicated or a "complex" problem in the first place, without that, nothing.

This is a very clever book, looking at business problem solving from a very different perspective. It attempts to dispel the virtues of common formulaic approaches to dealing with issues by first clarifying that complicated things are not necessarily complex, and that what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. More than a how-to book, this is one of those books that causes one to take a step back and reframe the focus of attention on how things operate for the purpose of finding new, creative, and more appropriate approaches to business and management. A worthwhile read.

The new 'bible' of modern business.

This book may fundamentally change the way you think. Or it may give you a framework to understand why you intuitively know that conventional management practices are sometimes incongruent with reality.“This book is about systems thinking, and more specifically the important distinction between simple, complicated, and complex systems as applied to common business problems… The world of business is usually complex rather than complicated. That may seem like word play, but the difference between ‘complicated thinking’ and ‘complexity thinking’ is profound. This important distinction is well accepted in the scientific community but is virtually unknown in business.” Nason explains, “The ability to manage complexity is the key to competitive advantage.”Simple systems can be easy like making coffee or difficult like teeing off in golf. Complicated systems have defined rules or procedures and replicable outcomes, such as accounting, manufacturing, or a mechanical watch.“Complex tasks cannot be completed by following a recipe or a set of instructions, or even an extensive list of rules and regulations… Complexity involves an unknown number of steps… Complex systems are neither predictable nor reproducible… With complexity there can be many different definitions or degrees of success.” Complex systems include outside sales, marketing, and R&D.“Complexity explicitly accounts for the interconnectedness of things and how that interconnectedness leads to fascinating characteristics such as adaptive behavior and leaderless emergence… The quality of being adaptive means that the actions of all the elements in a complex system affect one another, and in response each of the elements changes accordingly. Furthermore, change is continuous and ongoing.”“The most fundamental and important outcome of a complex system is a property called emergence. Emergence occurs when interconnected elements, such as a sector of consumers, or the actions of an industry, or even economic developments, evolve in ways that produce trends or patterns that look highly organized but in fact occur without any definable guiding hand… For instance, the ups and down of the stock market exhibit emergence. There appear to be up trends and down trends, but there is no mathematical model that can predict which way the market will go next.”“All of the players in a business setting—the company, its employees, the industry, its competitors, the customers, the regulators, the financial backers, the general public, and other players—are constantly adjusting their actions and opinions, based on the changes in actions, opinions, and perceptions of others. It is this never-ending and unpredictable dance that ultimately defines complexity. It is a phenomenon that scientists label emergence and that business calls competition.”“Unexpected and weak connections often produce key turning points and create emergence… Because of the Butterfly Effect and feedback loops, the actions of a relatively few number of people [can become] a major movement.”“With greater globalization there is greater connectivity, which acts as a catalyst for complexity. Consumer trends and ideas that start in one part of the world are quickly communicated and copied across borders.”“A complicated system can be dealt with in a reductionist way; that is, the pieces of a complicated system can be dealt with individually and separately. With complexity, because of connections, emergence, and serendipity, the system can only be understood and managed as a whole. It is not possible to reduce a complex system to its individual component parts.”“Complex systems are nuanced and require a nuanced approach… Complexity is based on having very few simple heuristics” rather than rigid rules.“One of the key requirements in managing complexity is the need to continuously observe and react to patterns and trends rather than focus on a fixed target—to maintain a ‘manage, not solve’ complexity mindset… This implies managing spontaneously and in the moment, rather than relying on a pre-ordained plan. Constant and ongoing adjustments need to be made using a ‘try, learn, and adapt’ methodology that require experimentation, creativity, and a tolerance for failure and miscues rather than knowledge, obedience, and conformity.”“Ultimately, adapting means changing along with the environment rather than trying to get the environment to change.”“Counterintuitively, organizations need to purposely introduce randomness into their operations for complexity success… Minimizing rules while introducing randomness means that at any given point in time there will be apparent inefficiencies in the system… Optimization… tries to minimize slack whenever possible, and, for certain complicated tasks such as keeping a factory functioning, this makes sense. However, for complex systems this approach prevents the system from learning and developing more efficient processes that are more suitable for emerging contexts.”“Managing complexity is more of a mindset than it is a set of steps that can be learned… A complexity mindset is a creative mindset. It focuses on what can be, rather than what is.” Nason adds, “Complexity is a concept that may best be grasped through experience rather than taught.”The author writes about the recent obsession with data and analytics. “It is tempting to do research and management where there are data. It gives the manager a feeling a feeling of doing something useful. However, managers need to be careful of falling into a trap of managing the measurable rather than managing the important… Often, particularly in cases of complexity, it is situations for which there are no or limited data that most need management’s attention.”The book includes a chapter on strategic planning. “In complex situations, the questions that are asked are generally more useful and valuable than any answers that might be forthcoming.” Nason cites Peter Schwartz, author of The Art of the Long View. “For Schwartz… good scenarios involve making connections and visualizing how elements can evolve.” The author also cites management strategist Henry Mintzberg: “The most successful strategies are visions, not plans.”There is also a chapter on risk management. “Audits and checklists are appropriate risk-management tools when the risk is simple or complicated in nature. However, with the inherent connectedness and globalization of business today, important risk issues are almost always complex. Risk management is by necessity an iterative and emergent process… Risk managers need to learn to recognize the emergent properties of risks. They need to expect phase shifts, paradigm shifts, ambiguity, and nonlinear behavior in the risks they are or will be faced with. Complex risks must be managed, not solved… To deal with complexity, risk management needs to take a holistic approach. Risk is not confined within separate independent boxes. Everything affects everything else, in often unpredictable ways.” The author also comments on counter-terrorism and the financial crisis in the context of complexity.“The more complex an issue is, the more valuable the role of the manager becomes… In the search for operational and cost efficiencies, tasks that are simple or complicated have gradually been eliminated or outsourced [or automated].”“Managers need to learn to become diverse learners… and develop new skills and new ways of critically looking at the world. Random learning is a counterintuitive but key strategy to deploy. Examples of random learning include reading magazines far from one’s normal areas of interest, taking part in unique cultural or artistic events, and talking to professionals from vastly different areas of business.”“We are living in the era of specialization, where experts know increasingly more about an increasingly narrow field of knowledge… We need to revive the concept of the Renaissance person to cope with an increasingly connected world that is becoming more complex and less complicated. ‘Complexity’ is expansionist, while ‘complicated’ is reductionist. ‘Complexity’ is eclectic, while ‘complicated’ is didactic. The need for individuals whose knowledge and interests range across a variety of fields and disciplines is greater than ever. It is regrettable that the current prevailing educational paradigms seem to run counter to this.”“Complexity abounds in business [but] most business functions also consist of components that are simple or complicated processes… Having an ability to deal with both complicated and complex tasks is the ideal for the business professional as well… You need to be creative as well as analytical.”“Complicated thinking belongs in the world of ‘organized and tidy’ while complexity characterizes the imperfect untidy world, but also the world in which managers most often find themselves… It is essential first to determine what type of system you are faced with—complicated or complex—and then to learn to accept ‘maybe’ as a possible result in the presence of complexity.”“Shifting to a complexity mindset requires confidence in one’s ability and in the benefit of taking chances and accepting risk. Rick provides "a new way to think about business problems and issues". This is explained throughout as understanding the difference between complicated and complex and embracing that difference. The complicated "can be separated and dealt with in a systematic and logical way" while the complex cannot be separated out..."there are no rules, algorithms". The difference is profound but we have muddled the two words together even using them interchangeably.The complicated can be codified with predictable and reproducible outcomes so success is well defined and often pre-ordained. Too many businesses and managers have become hooked on this construct because "Things that are complicated are well defined. They allow us to feel intelligent when we master them; they allow us to feel necessary; and perhaps most importantly, they allow us to feel that we are in control." We crave order, love the predictability of patterns, and get a rush from solving the complicated. That is much easier than addressing the complex with its nonlinear nature, randomness, loss of control, and richly interconnected and interdependent holistic make-up.This book is incredibly well-timed. I am assisting a company that actively addresses the complicated versus complex conundrum for businesses. He states, "The essence of this myth is that, with enough talent, brain power, and resources, business problems will be solved." Human history shows that that is not true.While this is a complex topic (all pun intended) Rick breaks it down and uses extremely helpful examples. His goal is not to intellectualize but to arm business leaders and managers with tools to take on real complexity. You will discover that this involves human nature so we all must embrace emergence, act with empathy, build connections and much more. This is almost a process of unlearning because we are patterned so much to linear complicated problem-solving not nonlinear, loss of control complexity or, as he puts it, "the traditional reductionist "command-and-control" complicated paradigm" versus a "complexity-thinking paradigm".The book will get you thinking and hopefully doing, that is, embracing and managing complexity. Our 10 year old granddaughter couldn't put it down.

I thought it would be an actual triology. It was a single book.You can't call something a trilogy if it is a normal length book.Normally these are called "chapters."

My 9 year old niece absolutely loved this book!! Highly recommended.

I found The Lost Diary delightful (even though I was prepared to hate it because I had read Brent’s Scratchling Born first.) The superciliousness I didn’t like when it impinged on more realistic characters with more authentically perilous dilemmas in Scratchling, was perfectly suited to the lives of fairy tale characters who even when faced with evil witches, queens or stepmothers, are never really in any danger and are permitted to change their fates and perils by rewriting the “book.” Mr. Brent has given his characters modern angsts and labels perfectly suited to his plot twists. The pace, the rhythm of familiar and unexpected, was engaging from start to finish. Lovely, lively story!

The Snow White story is cute, but it is misleading to call it a trilogy because the stories really couldn't can't alone. There is a Peter Pan "book" included as the second half, but the story isn't nearly as good. I am an adult and found the Snow White story quite amusing.

My daughter loved it. Only negative, she went through it too fast!

Absolute perfection! This is an incredibly stunning book. The photos are exquisite and the tablescapes, recipes, tips and ideas are superb. It is even more fabulous in person than it appears in the photos here which seems impossible- it is a real feast for the eyes. It is so comprehensive and is truly a wonderful resource for any hostess or host, for any sized gathering. Courtney is so knowledgeable and creative, paying impeccable attention to details. I am amazed at the variety of themes she highlights in the book and I love that there is also a section with amazing tips for additional themes- she really has thought of everything! Her insight and expertise is evident on every single page. I can't imagine anyone who would not benefit from and thoroughly enjoy this carefully and beautifully crafted book. My copy of Pizzazzerie Entertain in Style is in my living room for my friends to enjoy. Its visual design grabs immdiate attention. All have been hooked upon seeing the clever thematic table decorations and the doable recipes even I, a non-confident cook, could do. One friend clapped with joy upon seeing the "Book Club Gathering" idea, and I quickly gave her my extra copy. The "Derby Party" with a horse figurine, surely representing Secretariat, standing in a grassy setting in which a silver urn of roses is centered made me want run around a nearby courtyard as if I were at Churchhill Downs wearing a fancy hat. This book is completely gorgeous and fun from start to finish. Courtney's style and taste is impeccable and each page and design is full of amazing and attainable ideas for entertaining. The detail in this book is wonderful. Courtney obviously spent every moment she could filling this with her immense amount of knowledge of party planning and recipes down to some of the most delicious cocktails I can imagine. Evin’s photos are so detailed and bring out the beauty of the party scapes that she has so delicately brought to life. Most definitely a need for any one who loves a party, big or small, or simply loves entertaining!

From the moment you open this book you'll feel like you are able to entertain with ease. Not only is it a beutiful book to look thru but it also gives so many practical and easy tips. This book is beautiful! I purchased ad a gift for my mom for Christmas. She is our family “table lady” who goes all out for family dinners and birthday celebrations. If you are in school for (or are an) FNP or ANP(even the DO school at my university uses this text) this will give you Geriatric specific information to inform your current or future practice. It is very thorough and offers a download for your computer or tablet. Both are valuable resources. You can highlight and save points or information for quick reference.This is far from an exhaustive text. For more information specific to the general adult population, I suggest Goroll & Mulley "Primary Care Medicine: office evaluation and management of the adult patient" - also available at a reasonable price through Amazon. It also has a free download of the text to the device of your choice. Another less exhaustive but thorough text for primary care is CURRENT Medical Diagnosis & Treatment (2016) by Papadakis amd McPhee- again available from Amazon and with text download.Whether for class, clinic, or study... these are valuable to the primary care provider.As a note... the CURRENT text updates annually in late summer / early fall. The others come out with new editions less often.Best of luck on your endeavor to provide quality evidence based care to your patients.

In my FNP program, we were assigned a general adult text (Current 2017), a pediatric text, a women's health text, a basic FNP text (Fenstermacher), and this geriatric text. I found that this text, Ham et al, generally provided more and better information from a more rudimentary standpoint than did other texts--i.e., other texts often assumed the reader has a certain level of understanding, but for a student, that assumption is unwarranted, and so Ham provides better information because it generally goes back to the basics. This book was also effective at stoking my interest in geriatrics, an area in which I had previously had zero interest.That said, there is the occasional serious typo or grammatical error. Most of the typos are minor enough that you can basically understand what they're trying to say. Others, not so much. For example: "Little clinical trial dietary modifications and physical exercise to prevent or treat constipation, especially in older adults." (p. 285). What?Overall, this was my favorite text in my program because it gave me the basic information I needed to understand what the heck the other texts were talking about. However, the typos and grammatical errors, which occur at least once in almost every chapter, prevent me from giving it the full 5 stars.

Very good book. I'm a MSN FNP student who took a theory class on the care of older adults. Often information on Medscape or Epocrates was more current, but this book was published in 2013 so that is not surprising. It did not have all topics I was looking for but most of them. It was very helpful for writing papers and doing presentations. We had two texts for this theory class and this was my preferred resource.

Written in a very general manner with non specific information but overall relevant to general principles of geriatric medicine.

I love the case-based approach used by the book though the chapter occasionally draws from information gained from outside sources that the reader may be unfamiliar with.

Amazing story and an honest look at the life of a junkie. This is the only book I have finished without skipping pages or putting it down. This book is an easy read and only took two evenings in bed to finish. I couldn't put it down it was just gripping and I wanted to know more and more about Brandon's journey. As someone with a severe disease that takes heavy prescription pills every day I live in constant fear of ending up like Brandon and his story is an important piece to keep those of us who need these drugs to survive. Highlights of this story are the story of Brandon and his new friend in the blue Mercedes, Dane and Guy Leeper, the sometimes abusive but well-meaning relationship with Bam Margera, the amazing story of the Margera's and Mrs. Novak, and walking the streets desperate for a fix only to get drywall. I can't wait to read this again to read it from a different aspect. I found myself sitting outside, with a cigar, enjoying the warm Texas late night air with this book in my hand. Brandon, I wish you luck. I know you will slip and fall many times in your life but the important thing is that you beat this disease and you take care of yourself.

Loved it. This is a book for anyone that is a fan of the CKY Crew as Novak has always been connected to them over the years in their various hijinks or a person who has had the unfortunate luck to be involved with a drug addiction or knows someone who has been. It really sheds light on the tragedies an addict faces and what kind of hurdles they attempt to overcome to beat their sin. Novak's history is also detailed very much so if you've ever been more curious about the man who is usually Bam's punching bag you will enjoy the insight into his earlier years. I personally know a friend who is a recovering drug addict right now and this was a book they had at his halfway house which was brought up to me one day when I visited him. He didn't even know who Novak was or his history with the CKY Crew but told me he really found the book to be a help as well as a embarrassing mirror that shed reflection on his own former drug life.

This book was incredible. I've been a Jackass fan my entire life. My cousin introduced me to CKY when I was 10 or 11 and we grew up together watching CKY and Jackass. Recently he passed away from an overdose. I was distraught, angry, and confused. The second I got Dreamseller I could not put it down. I actually read it in one day. It helped me a lot with my grief. Also just to be able to get a glance into their personal life was great. I cannot wait for the sequel! I love to hear some crazy Novak stories. That dude is something else...

I actually met Brandon a couple of weeks ago when I did a podcast with him & a rapper/motivational speaker/recovery bad ass named Sirah. I knew Sai, that's how I ended up getting involved, but I had no idea who Brandon was until a few hours into meeting him. I never watched Jackass & I was never into skateboarding so to me, he was just another guy, but our conversations were incredible. He is so authentic & down to earth that it was so refreshing to talk to him. When I found out who he was & that he had a book, I knew I needed to know more about him. This book is a really great, no sugar coating, view of addiction. He shares parts of his story that aren't pretty & yet they're the thing that people need to see. This is what recovery looks like & the passion that Brandon has for recovery & sharing that to help others is inspiring. I look forward to seeing what he & Sirah will do with this podcast series & to share this book with others in my circle. I highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite books. I have a cousin who has struggled with heroine addiction on and off the the better part of 6 years. Reading this has helped me understand the mind of an addict a little better and I'm really grateful for that.And then there's the fact that its Novak.... He's always had the gift of gab, and can tell the best stories. I really can't wait to read his new book soon.

I must say that being a part of addiction awareness causes, being the mother of a recovering addict and wanting to see it from another perspective, this book opened my eyes. I couldn't put this book down and was done it basically in two days. I commend Brandon Novak for his bluntness, his truth, his honesty and to be able to open my eyes from the other side-I applaud you 100%. You made me see things from your eyes, you also expressed how you realized what it did to your own family, I have torn myself apart for years thinking it was my fault, but knew deep down it wasn't, that I'm not wrong for still wanting to be there and support my own. Thank you for the frankness, opening up the way you did and allowing me to understand better. God bless you

this book has surprises at every corner and it kept me at the edge of my seat. this book it heart warming and I loved it. it shows drug abuse from a junkies eyes. it's a really good book and a real page Turner. it also has bits of moral showing you that being in the grip of a true monster can be a nightmare.

If there is only ONE book you read this year this should BE IT. No I am not pimping out the book because of monetary gain etc al. Very well done!!!I recently was asked to help a dying VB.NET project. I am a Swift, C#, Java guy and the VB.NET syntax is just down right ugly to me. It is way too verbose.This book went way beyond my expectations. It didn't just do a 1 to 1 translation, it also explains why some things are different.I found it very useful and highly recommend it!!!

I was given a copy of this book to review by the Dayton Dot Net Group recently. I found it to be an extremely well written handbook that serves as a useful reference not only in translation from C# to VB or VB to C# but also as a quick reference for those lesser used features when you know it's there and just can't recall the details. Every feature is described with examples in both VB and C# syntax. It's not a book you would read from cover to cover and it won't teach you to program in .dot net. What it will do is save you lots of time googling for answers to the sort of questions we all run into on a regular basis. It's a good value at it's very reasonable price. The book is divided into three logical sections: C# => VB, VB=>C#, and "My" Namespace => C#. While it only provides a comprehensive listing of keywords and other syntactic features, it would be great if it also covered the common class libraries the same such as ADO.NET and WCF. Perhaps another book is forthcoming on those?
