You: A Novel, by Caroline Kepnes

Review

"Hypnotic and scary...never read anything quite like it." (Stephen King)“My most favorite thriller." (Lena Dunham)"YOU is superb. So funny, apart from anything else, and properly clever. It is: different, hot." (Sophie Hannah, New York Times bestselling author of The Monogram Murders and The Other Woman's House)"This is one of the most unsettling books I’ve read this year, but despite being thoroughly creeped out, I couldn’t put it down even for a second. It’s narrated by the villain, which makes for a rather unnerving read. I even found myself accidentally rooting for him as he was about to commit pretty heinous crimes. Whoops." (Bustle) "An impending sense of dread hangs over Kepnes' cleverly claustrophobic debut, in which love takes on a whole new meaning...Kepnes keeps the reader guessing." (Kirkus Reviews)“Intense and deeply disturbing, You is a dark story told in a fresh voice, and an addictive read from beginning to end. Being inside Joe Goldberg’s head was both a thrill and a nightmare, and yet I didn’t want to wake up. I look forward to more from the very talented Caroline Kepnes.” (Jennifer Hillier, author of THE BUTCHER)“Chilling...[Kepnes' YOU] will have readers looking over their shoulders.” (Publisher's Weekly)"Chilling...unrelenting." (USAToday.com)“A deeply dark yet mesmerizing first novel of two people caught in a romantic tangle with an ever-tightening knot.” (Booklist)"Is Caroline Kepnes’ 'You' the next GONE GIRL? It'll take you inside a psychopath’s head... and might even make you like him. A mad and macabre love story." (TimeOut Australia)

I gave this book 5 STARS... I did this for many many reasons. First I want to start off telling you that this is one of those books that you will either not like or LOVE! I LOVED it. It isn't your every day run-of-the-mill book. It's a deep and twisted psychological driven book. It's twisted and messed up! For some, it may be hard to follow. I will tell you why... First, the writing style isn't what your normal reader is used to. It truly takes talent to write an entire book in second-person. With the second-person writing comes the pop culture aspect. Caroline uses so many pop culture references, I even didn't get all of them. And I am pretty sure I should have. Then you have the mental state of the main characters.Joe, is obviously disturbed. I spent a greater part of the book trying to diagnose him. He is so messed up in the head. However, Beck doesn't really have all of her screws either. After all, she becomes close with her stalker... And in some ways, once she realizes he has been stalking her, she seems half okay with it.This book is a journey with an ending. I say it that way for a reason. It's not necessarily happy or sad or earth shattering. If I had to categorize this book, it would be in the MUST READ MESSED UP book category. Since that category only exists in my head, I would say it's part new adult and part psychological thriller. I read this book about a month ago, and I still find myself daydreaming about it with the confused head tilt. No lie!

Writing in first person is probably one of the more difficult viewpoints for an author to tackle. Kepnes proves this, at least partially, in You, her debut novel. The first half of this book is tedious, almost to the point of wanting to stop reading. But the second half picks up and makes this a worthwhile read. The ending was predictable, with a slight twist that made it satisfying.Since the main character works in a bookstore, there are several references to various well-known novels, as one might expect. This is a bit overdone, in my opinion, and felt more like the author trying to impress with her literary knowledge. What this novel lacked, was the tension or edge of your seat page turning that makes for a great mystery/suspense novel. The “praises” this book has received made my expectation high, only to find, it does not deliver. This one gets three stars, as it is an okay read, just not a great one.

So, I have this book on my kindle, hardback and now, audio. But, this was my very first audio book and I am glad I dived in with Santino Fontana's interpretation of Joe Goldberg. He captured the essence of the character perfectly. I began reading this book about a year and a half ago and never finished it for some reason. I liked the book and the way it was written, so not sure what it was that made me put it down. But once I heard Santino as Joe, I knew I hit the jackpot. He nailed it!Joe is just a normal guy living a normal life in NY. He is the epitome of an "average Joe" , but with better looks ;)He works at and bookstore and is obviously very well read. He never graduated from college so that apparently puts him behind his peers. But what he lacks in an education he makes up for in his inner dialogue. He is witty and smart and knows his way around just about anything. Including finagling his way into Beck's life, which isn't easy with all the outside sources (her friends and somewhat boyfriend). The side characters were just as important as the main characters and the tone of the story is what kept me coming back for more. It's not crazy slash 'em 80's horror. It's a psychological thriller that makes you think. That makes you look at the inner part of everyone's thought process and what they do with their life. The difference is, that Joe thinks what he does is bettering the world. Almost like Dexter in some ways. He rids the world of people that dirty those around them. But "reading" this book by audio was completely different than turning the pages. Santino Fontana just nailed his performance of Joe. The way he captured Joe as normal yet with a huge side of crazy was perfection. He was the guy you could count on and think nothing of it. He wasn't crazy, he wasn't psychotic. He was Just Joe. But Santino has a way of reading into each character and making you believe he IS Joe.Fantastic job to him and to Ms Kepnes for making us believe that all is normal in NY. :) Can't wait for more!

As with the first two installments in this series, I finished this quickly -- the reading level is clearly aimed at late-elementary and tween readers. It somehow managed to offer even more action than the prior volumes, though I'm grateful for the moments that allowed me a breather. It picked up immediately from Book 2's ominous cliffhanger; but here, instead of a PokemonGo take, the focus was robots -- not just giants, but sizes ranging down to that of insects.Speaking of which, I appreciated how a newcomer brought in a presence that nearly reminded me of BB-8 from "Star Wars." Not only that, it was refreshing for me to see another introduction break the, shall we say, boy-centric tone of the series. One instance of raw, lonely despair was unexpected -- I'd almost deem it a bit risky for kid-oriented literature. Yet I welcomed it because it injected a dose of realism to all the sci-fi/fantasy goings-on.

The ONLY negative thing I can say about this series is that there isn't a number 4 yet! My boys (9,7,& 5) and I flew through these and we all really loved them. Please keep them coming Dustin!!

My son absolutely loves these books!!! He's actually a pretty good reader to the point where he was getting bored. Concerned he'd get out of practice, I found these books before Christmas and he's now on the fourth book in just a month( and re-read books one and two twice before getting three and four for his birthday Jan19)! We're already eagerly awaiting book five. It's so great to find a children's chapter book that captivates what so many kids are passionate about.

I had given Book 1 to my grandson for his 9th birthday. It became his favorite book. For Christmas he asked for the remaining books in the series. He loves playing Minecraft and Roblox so this was perfect for him.

I bought 3 of the Trapped in a Video game for my grandson. He loves video games and I am hoping he also will love to read and maybe will happen since they are all about his favorite thing to do. Fingers crossed. He liked them

My son loved when I read this series aloud to him. It's very creative. The words create vivid pictures in both of our minds.

Son loves it.

This is a great series for kids. My 10-yr -old grandson loved them all. He read slow to make them last longer. He loves to read, but these seemed to be especially popular.

At first sight, Ober's book might seem only relevant to alumni, faculty and students of the International College (IC), an American school in Beirut, Lebanon. The book, however, goes far beyond that. It highlights the culture barrier between an American who was assigned to help recover the American character of this school, which throughout Lebanon's long civil war was dominated by local officers who brought with them their "Arab way" of doing things at the time it was too risky for Americans to maintain any presence in war-shattered Lebanon. As the chapters of this very-well researched book unfold, the experience of a school president in his failed mission to modernize the school tells a lot about why the United States was rarely successful in most of its endeavors in the Arab world, on top of them its war in Iraq and its effort to democratize it.Consequently, this book appeals to several audiences. Naturally, the first one of these audiences would be the International College's community and its graduates in addition to the community of the American University of Beirut (AUB) and a third American school in Beirut, the American Community School (ACS) as Ober tells the story of American missionaries and produces the history of the establishment of both IC and AUB, their affiliation and their later separation that resulted in their disagreement over real estate issues. The second kind of audience would be students of the Middle East in the West and, to an extent, Western governments. After all, this 19th century missionary activity survived more than a century and its experience should be studied should the West decide to embark on such missions of modernization in the Arab world.

This book is chock full of biases from page one. The author asserts that the school is "non-sectarian" and allows all "Arabs" to attend. Perhaps he has missed the point here. Jews are not permitted to attend. Armenians, who do attend, are not Arab. He supports Hizbullah, describing there attacks on Israel as part of their 'resistance'. It is always interesting to see the President of an American University, even if it is in the Middle East, condoning terrorism and supporting Islamism. But thats only the tip of the iceberg. The author lets the readers learn how previous American academics at AUB actually spread anti-semitic lies by telling their students that many of the Young Turks were actually 'hidden' Jews. Once again it is interesting to learn the degree to which the AUB actually helped foster hatred of Jews in Beirut and helped encoruage Islamic fundamentalism and nationalism. It is interesting to read about how an academic institution supposedly based on the American collegiate model is used to for nationalist-fascist goals. The author also is either ill informed or intentionally biased when it comes to Lebanon's history. He claims that the Maronite began the civil war, which is a complete fabrication. The attempted assasination of Sheikh Pierre Gemeyal was the opening shot of the Lebanese Civil war and the subsequent ethnic-cleansing and mass murder of Maronite Christians was the result of the war. The book insinuates the opposite, even while bombs go off daily in the Maronite sections of Beirut to this day.A biased book which at long last reveals the truth behind the AUB.Seth J. Frantzman

Purchased this thinking I would get at the very least one good project to build on my new Dremel 3D45 printer, despite the negative reviews. Unfortunately all of the negative reviews were correct and I should have listened..... aaarrgghh

no worth it

The software for this book can no longer be used. It is outdated so the book should no longer be available! No reason to buy this book. Get the updated version.

love the book very informative

Book was a new shape and very interesting for a newbie to have.

Good book

I bought this book by chance at B&N when I was casually browsing at the bookstore.I simply looked at the list of projects and bought it just on that basis. When I got home, I was shocked and pleased at the same time to find that this book was written for the Simple Metal 3D printer. And co-incidentally, I own a Printrbot Simple Metal 3D printer.I have earnestly began working on the projects and my 12 year old seems to be very interested in the most basic of the projects - the 3D printed Desk lamp. And I've become interested in the Raygun Pen Stand. We're currently very occupied in printing out the parts for these projects.Regardless of the type of 3D printer you own, this is a great way to get started with 3D printing. The projects range from real simple to super complex, and I think that this gets an absolute novice the motivation needed to get on with 3D printing.

If you are using this book at home with a child then the projects may be worth it. I found the cost of each project to be ridiculously expensive for what was being created. This book is useless if you are looking for ideas to use in a classroom like I was. I hoped some of the projects would be suitable for students to make but when a small cone lamp is listed at 6 hours to print all parts for one unit, that is not going to work.
