Ehrman argues for two theses, one practical and one more abstract. The practical thesis can be summarized as: We do not possess any of the original writings of the New Testament, and the copies we have are riddled with negligent and/or intentional alterations. Therefore, the New Testament we read today, which is based upon numerous altered copies, is not very close to the original text. And if the original text is the Word of God, the Word of God is lost. The abstract thesis can be summarized as: For any text, both the author's and the reader's subjective beliefs and experiences condition the meaning of the words, and therefore color the interpretation of the text. As a result, there is no such thing as an objectively true interpretation of a text. The search for the "correct" meaning is fruitless. Therefore, no one can claim to know the true meaning of the text of the New Testament. The upshot? The New Testament we read today is of human, and not divine, origin (practical thesis), and, in any event, any claim to "the One True Interpretation" is in principle false (abstract thesis).I will not take a stand on Ehrman's claims but hope I've faithfully outlined them for people deciding whether to purchase the book. I am familiar with but not well-versed in either the New Testament or textual criticism. Nonetheless, I found his arguments and analysis easy to track. The broad historical information was interesting, and the biblical passages he focuses on to illustrate his points are engaging instead of arcane. Some may consider this book anti-religious, but Ehrman's tone is respectful and honest, not polemical. For such a short, accessible book, the reader can gain a lot from reading it.

A well written book about the evolution of the Bible, particularly the New Testament, and how our present text came to be in all its various forms. Dr. Ehrman begins with a brief summary of his own life. From an "ordinary kid" he becomes a fundamentalist Christian believing the Bible to be wholly inspired. During his graduate program in a Christian school he develops an interest in the wide variety of historical documents that have, through many generations come down to us a our present Bible. He becomes, in short, a textual-scholar, and has an epiphany!Ehrman quickly learns that there are no longer any "original texts" anywhere. The earliest texts found, more fragmented the farther back one goes, come from the 2nd century some 100 years after Jesus' death. None of the original Apostles, nor Paul are any longer alive at that point, and what early notes exist for geographically fragmented communities are already copies of lost originals. Even if the literal-original writing was "inspired by God" as fundamentalists claim, by the opening of the 2nd century the earliest copies of these writings have already passed through human hands and the real originals are no more. Except for the Christian community of Alexandria where professional scribes already existed, all of the early copies were made by amateur believers who, as it happened could read and write, and so copied texts for their congregations; sometimes well and sometimes poorly. It was not until late in the 4th century that more professional scribes assumed the copyist role.Roughly the first half of the book is taken up with the history of textual criticism. Ehrman leads us through early (17th century) classification attempts and the techniques developed to determine which texts were "more original" than others. Ehrman notes that in many many cases even that matter cannot be decided with any finality. That the modern obsession with the text began after the Reformation is no accident. Protestant scholars were far more compulsive about the text than Catholics. Protestant theology and doctrine rests entirely on the text, while Catholicism has its priestly class for precisely the task of interpreting the text in what ever form it takes. By the 18th century, scholars had identified some 30,000 textual variations in the manuscripts that come together as the then relatively stabilized New Testament. Most of these variations were simply mistakes made by non-professional copyists. Sometimes they left out a word or whole sentences. Sometimes what there were of literal originals were physically degraded even when first copied. Copyists sometimes had to "fill in the blanks", a smudged word, or a bleed-through from some earlier text on the page for example. So why not go back to the more professional Alexandrian texts and call those "closest to original"? Because while the vast majority of changes were copy errors, not all were merely that. Here and there changes were made for theological and socio-political reasons. In point of fact (something he does not mention) the Alexandrian scholars were among those who, by the early 5th Century, were considered among the heretical sects by the then solidifying Roman Church. Ehrman does not mention is the textual difference between the modern Western (Roman) and Eastern (Greek and Eastern European "Orthodox") churches. His aim is historical, and he does cover the early Greek texts whose alterations became mixed in with all of the others. In the second half of the book Ehrman covers three types of changes made deliberately by one group of copyists or another so as to make the text easier to read and better line up with the various theological opinions and social controversies of the time, each propounded by groups of believers who were doing their own copying! In the end, Ehrman is forced to conclude that even the lost originals were probably not autodidacts (texts dictated by God) because if God had wanted Christians to have his un-corrupted words in perpetuity, He would have made sure the originals survived.I gave the book 5 stars not because the book's subject was of great interest to me, but because Dr. Ehrman does such a marvelous job of treating a scholarly subject (many many references are provided) with easy to read language aimed at non-scholars of the subject like myself.

As a textual critic, Erhman does a thorough job of illustrating the meandering path the New Testament has taken from the original writings to what we read today. I don’t challenge his work as a critic and can easily accept the multitude of errors, amendments, exclusions, and modifications he presents. However, ones faith system doesn't necessarily depend on the validity of a virgin birth, the exact definition of the Trinity, or other miracles & orthodoxy. While one can’t deny these things, one can’t exactly confirm them either. That’s where Erhman loses me. He connects textual variations with a denial of orthodoxy – essentially, since God isn’t acting the way he expects, he abandons faith and uses textual criticism as proof. I don’t get that at all. There are hundreds of books about Abraham Lincoln. Some of them are near works of fiction and even the best have historical errors and bad assumptions. That doesn’t mean that Lincoln wasn’t the 16th President and never spoke at Gettysburg. I know the weight placed on the New Testament is much greater than any Lincoln biography, but that would seem to be a reason to extract what one can from the works rather than abandon them. It’s possible that the different gospels were included because they provided a different point of view. Maybe Mark was more data driven than Matthew and that difference allows another angle on Jesus’ teachings. I’m glad I read the book and appreciate Erhman’s scholarship, but I challenge his conclusions.

Good to see the options that look tasty and are still allowed.

The first part of the book (finally) spelled out my goals. I've never seen them all in one place. I cannot wait to try the recipes. There are so many that would look good if this were a traditional cookbook. The salad dressings were especially welcome.

Susan did it again! This book is absolutely wonderful. She makes it so easy to read, and understand. Susan brings forward so many wonderful recipes that I know my patients will very much enjoy. They loved the first edition of the renal diet cookbook. The patients are no longer struggling to find what they can or can't eat; I highly recommend this book again to my patients with CKD.

So far I have tried about a dozen recipes and while some are hit and miss, most come out good. I don't miss the salt in most recipes because it has flavor and the recipes are easy with most ingredients available in my kitchen. I am planning on buying one for my brother in law who only had one kidney because my sister complains about how bland the meals she prepares are and I think they will !ike these recipes.

I would like to rate this book with caution, because when I bought it I googled ‘Dialysis cook book’ and this one came up. It is absolutely not for dialysis patients. In fact, this book is for beginners that have just been diagnosed with CKD maybe stage 1 to 2, it is for someone that does not yet understand how the kidneys are functioning and needs a general understanding such as reading grocery labels, and an explanation what role sodium, potassium, fat, protein and phosphorus plays in one’s daily meal preparations. I am not convinced that a kidney patient needs a recipe for Mint or Carrot Peach Water. The recipes in this book are very limited and there are 10-20 each on low-sodium that could be found in a cardio health book, further there are low protein recipes that are completely useless for someone on dialysis, since I have problems eating enough proteins to keep my labs up. And the recipes on low-fat are so simple that they could be categorized as redundant, because it’s just common since.I am disappointed in this publication, it has no pictures of the recipes what so ever, and I am a visual person. I personally am not in need of recipes for Walnut Pilaf or Wild Mushroom Couscous, Turkey Barley Stew, Spicy Sesame Tofu or Lentil Veggie Burgers, but that’s me.This book has 4-week meal plans in the categories, low sodium, low fat and low protein, but the recipes read more like a punishment or a temporary diet plan and are not for the average person. I have established great recipes and an achievable meal plan over the years of my CKD, and now I am in End Stage and do Dialysis, waiting for a kidney transplant, and my joy in life is to cook and make tasteful, visually appealing meals that inspire me to eat. A patient in dialysis does not have a great appetite and often a hard time to eat and this book does not inspire me at all.I wished for a book with inspirations to cook healthy meals, acceptable for dialysis patients, but did not get it, so my rating reflects just that.

Since so many patients with a decline in kidney function are diabetic I found many recipes unsuitable for me. I was hoping to find information that would help me balance my diabetes and healthier kidney function and did not find it.

This book has very interesting info on kidney disease and recipes to prepare that are kidney friendly. I have another copy of this book but have a vacation home in another state; this copy is going there so I don't have to carry it with me each trip. disease

If you need a cookbook of this type this is a good one. The tables for phosphorous, sodium, fiber, and potassium levels are very helpful.

This book has been very helpful. Most of the recipes I've tried have been good. The notes below each recipe are a bonus. It also has good information for patients with CKD.

The topic is certainly important, and any attempt at transparency is welcome. But the writing is so dense and esoteric it is almost unreadable. The author may know his stuff, but he needs to take a writing course. I wonder if he had an editor. I watched the author on CSPAN giving a talk about his book. He speaks about as well as he writes. Buyer beware.

This book addresses the very important contemporary topic of big data, social analytics, digital privacy and artificial intelligence algorithms. The book is highly readable, and the thoughts are well laid out. I find it a must read for everyone interested in those topics.

We all know that web services sell data from our use of the internet. But how do they make that data useful to anyone? That is the purpose of We Are Data. It laboriously elucidates the often arcane machinations of the Googles and Facebooks of the world. At bottom, there is an algorithm, a mathematical construct, ever tweaked to reflect new realities, so you can’t pin it down from one day to the next. Algorithms spit out decisions based on your individual clicks, searches, e-mail, contact lists and chats. They decide who you are in order to appeal to data purchasers. According to your activity and location, it might classify you as a man even though you are a woman, old though you are young, black though you are white, and so on. You could be gay one day and straight the next. Doesn’t matter. Your activity and location is just a commodity for sale in bulk.Web services structure the raw data into algorithmically constructed data objects, according what is useful to clients. It could be ‘terrorist’ for the NSA for example. (There are two kinds of beings in the world – those without quotation marks, and those with, the latter being cyber constructs). Facebook’s ‘terrorist’ could be completely different from Google’s. It’s purely a convenience for the sake of the buyer, be it TSA or Starbucks.Everything is monetized (but you receive none of it). The dictum is that if it is not in principle measurable, or if it is not being measured, it doesn’t exist. Individuals cease to matter. They become dividuals, the cyber distillation of the data they generate. We Are Data is a missing link in the chain of how the world operates. it is also quite dense and dry. There are precious few examples of how real people are affected. It is however, festooned with empty when not totally meaningless references to Michel Foucault. Just name dropping, while adding zero insight. I would say he is mentioned about 40 times. In places, We Are Data reads like it was written by an algorithm. But just when you want to give up, Cheney-Lippold sends a missile across the bow: ”Almost everything that is algorithmic is a lie.” I wish he would have led with that instead of his 40 page intro. It would have been a much more dynamic book.So the bad news is privacy is non-existent. Irretrievable. Gone forever. The good news is nobody wants to know who you really are anyway. Just keep clicking.David Wineberg

This book was so poorly written that I’m shocked a publisher even touched it. The author makes no attempt to explain these esoteric concepts in a comprehensible way, that I suspect he has no idea what he’s talking about. Some of his assertions are flat out wrong and show a deep misunderstanding of logic. Waste of time and money.

The author is a suspended professor at University of Michigan. He wrote a letter of recommendation for a female student and then withdrew it after finding out she wanted to go to Tel-Aviv University. Google his name for the full story.

Great the book, great the package.

this book is totally inspiring. everyone should read it!

Spies for Hire: The Secret World of Intelligence Outsourcing, by Tim Shorrock

From Publishers Weekly

Even James Bond is temping these days. According to investigative journalist Shorrock, the CIA and other intelligence agencies now have more contractors working for them than they do spies of their own. Often former staff hired back at double or triple their former government salaries, these private contractors do everything from fighting in Afghanistan to interrogating prisoners, aiming spy satellites and supervising secret agents. Shorrock gives a comprehensive—at times eye-glazing—rundown of the players in the industry, and his book is valuable for its detailed panorama of 21st-century intelligence work. He uncovers serious abuses—contractor CACI International figured prominently in the Abu Ghraib outrages—and nagging concerns about corrupt ties between intelligence officials and private corporations, industry lobbying for a national surveillance state, the withering of the intelligence agencies' in-house capacities and the displacement of an ethos of public service by a profit motive. However, the bulk of the outsourcing Shorrock unearths is rather pedestrian, involving the management of mundane IT systems and various administrative services, and this exposé insinuates more skullduggery than it demonstrates. From The Washington Post

Reviewed by Jeff Stein Not long ago I had lunch with a recently retired senior CIA officer who worked himself into an expletive-laced rage over private contractors who had taken up seats in the agency's sanctum sanctorum, the clandestine services where the spies roam. Many of them, he said, had spent only a few years working for the agency. Then they performed Washington's version of alchemy, turning their top-secret security clearances into gold-plated jobs with the new breed of Beltway bandits, the intelligence contractors, at twice their old pay. Unlike in decades past, when firms such as Boeing and Lockheed provided spy planes and satellites and other hardware that the CIA could not possibly build itself, the new breed of contractor offers the CIA guys in trench coats and black ops gear, ready to do the work the agency traditionally has done. My CIA acquaintance, who retired as chief of a large European station, groused that making money had replaced duty, honor, country in the spy ranks -- and along with it, accountability. "If they make a mistake," he asked, "do you think their company is going to admit it, if it threatens their contract?" Late last year, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden finally jammed a crowbar into the revolving doors, barring ex-employees from returning to work on their old projects for 18 months. As investigative reporter Tim Shorrock notes in this valuable (and angry) book, contractors have long had the run of the Pentagon and CIA, working hand in hand on projects ranging from reconnaissance satellites to Predator drones. But Shorrock persuasively shows that the business has changed dramatically in recent years, beginning even before the Sept. 11 attacks set off a homeland security gold rush.Today, intelligence contracting is a $45 billion-a-year industry, he says, chewing up three quarters of the estimated $60 billion intelligence budget. It is no longer limited mainly to providing hardware; its reach now extends from top to bottom, from data-mining contractors who sift the Internet for terrorist activity to spy handlers, regional intelligence analysts and ex-special operations troops who run paramilitary operations.Cold War-era hardware, such as the U-2 spy plane, unquestionably made us safer. Has outsourcing made us safer in an age of non-state terrorism? Shorrock does not think so. As the U.S. occupation of Iraq was tanking in 2006, he writes, intelligence contractors gathered "over sushi and Chinese hors d'oeuvres . . . sipping cognac" at a conference at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, where they gloated over their business fortunes. "The industry's on a roll," one investment adviser told him, even if the war on terror isn't. The new buzz phrase, according to Shorrock, is "net centric warfare," a contractor-supplied technology that pushes information out "to the soldier at the tip of the spear," allowing him "to download data, imagery, and intelligence from computer bases located in nearby command posts or from spy planes flying overhead." Net centric warfare "is right in the sweet spot we provide for our customers," Shorrock quotes Robert Coleman, president of ManTech International, a top intelligence contractor, telling investors at the Mandarin Oriental. The event's keynote speaker was former CIA Director George Tenet, who within three months of his speech "would join, either as a director or an adviser, four companies that were directly involved with the high-tech military strategies he was endorsing," Shorrock writes. This is a movie version of Washington, of course, with black-hat war profiteers right out of Catch-22's M & M Enterprises. Beyond the caricatures is a world in which contractors necessarily fill gaps in U.S. intelligence capabilities and provide valuable new technology. Yes, they're turning a profit along the way, but is that inherently evil, as Shorrock suggests? His book would have benefited mightily from interviews with some of the officials he lampoons. But one-sided though it is, it contains some important, timely truths about the influx of private entrepreneurs into America's spy agencies. Shorrock -- a frequent contributor to such liberal muckraking magazines as Mother Jones, the Nation and the Progressive -- dates the beginning of the intelligence "outsourcing boom" to the Carter and Reagan years, when cutting the federal payroll became a Washington mantra. But it was during the Clinton administration that the privatization of intelligence went on steroids, abetted by industry-dominated study commissions championed by Vice President Al Gore and Defense Secretary William Cohen. Oh, the savings, purred the representatives of Boeing, Lockheed Martin, L-3 Communications and other contracting giants on the board of the National Defense Panel, which recommended a vast privatization of national security activities. More than 30,000 government jobs, it estimated, could be cut."A revolution in business affairs," Gore and Cohen said in a joint statement. "A corporate vision for the Defense Department," said Cohen, more precisely. The revolution was accompanied by the collapse of the Soviet Union, which was to provide a "peace dividend" through reductions in national security spending. The soft part of the budget, as always, was personnel. R. James Woolsey, faced with cuts as Bill Clinton's CIA director in 1993, slashed the number of large CIA stations by more than 60 percent and of case officers working overseas by more than 30 percent, Shorrock reports. The spies were out in the cold. Yet Woolsey was "ferocious" in defending the intelligence community's technical budget, according to Spies for Hire: "He fought vigorously to increase spending on expensive high-technology programs -- precisely the vehicles that were funding the great leaps being made at the time by Titan, Martin Marietta, and other companies he advised before going to the CIA." That's a nasty swipe. Is Shorrock suggesting that Woolsey fired spies to make a buck for his pals? Alas, Woolsey doesn't get space to defend himself. In any event, as has been fully reported elsewhere, the CIA was sadly lacking HUMINT -- spy handlers collecting human intelligence -- when al-Qaeda's storm hit landfall in New York and Washington. So the old boys who had been cut from the rolls, or had retired, saw an opportunity. One of them was Richard "Hollis" Helms, a 30-year CIA veteran who retired in 1999. "In the months after the 9/11 attacks, he began taking notice of the many retired intelligence officers who were being hired by defense contractors," Shorrock writes. He "seized the moment" and created Abraxas, which quickly grew into a company with $65 million in revenues and more than 200 former intelligence officers on its payroll, "the largest aggregate of analytical counter-terrorism capabilities outside of the U.S. government." Would the United States be better off if those operatives were working as CIA employees, reporting directly to agency supervisors rather than to private bosses whose loyalty to the company's bottom line may trump the nation's national security? After reading Shorrock's strenuous indictment, you will wonder. Copyright 2008, The Washington Post. All Rights Reserved.

You have no doubt heard of the military industrial complex. Tim Shorrock brings you its mirror image: the intelligence industrial complex. These are the private-sector contractors who are secretly running America's intelligence activities. Shorrock shows how with limited oversight they are feasting on billions of taxpayers dollars and involving themselves in some of the darkest operations the U.S. government undertakes. While the book is now, post-Snowden, somewhat dated, it continues to be an essential primer.Jake BernsteinJournalistAuthor of “Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite” http://amzn.to/2hVuohf

I first learned about Spies for Hire from various people I follow on Twitter, who were amazed Dana Priest and William Arkin didn't cite it in their Top Secret America series. I decided to see (or rather, read) for myself, and can now say having read both the book and the Priest/Arkin articles that yes, Shorrock was all over this story years ago, and in far greater depth than the Post piece, which functioned largely as an update of what Shorrock had already reported in this book and elsewhere. I don't have a problem with the Post updating Shorrock's reporting, but it's pretty lame of them to pretend they weren't in his debt. Anyway, if you care about the corporatism that's slowly strangling our democracy, there's no better book I know of than this one. The conclusion was especially powerful. Highly recommended.

The book is poorly written but I read it just before Snowden's revelations. It accurately describes a tendency I saw early in my career in the intelligence world - the outsourcing of intelligence analysis to competent technicians. As in the real business world, advancement comes through supervision and policy making. Thus, NSA hires lackeys [albeit very competent ones] to do their grit work for them. This was going on in the 60s early in my 30 plus year career in intelligence. The book reveals in boring detail just how widely prevalent this has become. Now the finger pointing is beginning, and blame is sought for ever giving the likes of Snowden a clearance. People like me with a memory remember when NSA gave one half of the Martin and Mitchell traitor duo a clearance although they knew one of this traitorous twosomes bizarre traits was having sex with a chicken and slamming a drawer on the chicken's head at the moment of climax. If you don't believe me, this incident is set forth in David Kahn's seminal history of code breaking, "The Codebreakers". Kahn eventually was hired by NSA, possibly so he would not embarrass them in future literary revelations. As for the current brouhaha, the Facebook generation has no concept of privacy and this whole revelation will soon be as old as yesterday's headline. Nothing will come of it, and if people had to choose between more terrorist attacks, which NSA is doing a pretty good job of preventing in the CONUS, or another giant terrorist attack, they will pick safety before privacy. It's a new world and the people under 40 today have ideas and morays as alien to me as an extraterrestrial from another galaxy.

This was a very informative look at how much of our national security has been farmed out to the private sector. It shows , also, how easily our elected officials can be bought.

This book really goes into detail about how the intelligence field and it's spy work is being outsourced today. Yes James Bond still has a place in this world but he would most likely be a private contractor instead of employed at CIA or MI6

The book is well-referenced, making skillful use of first-person sources. Each chapter is filled with information and provide deeper insight into what, in some books, is just a listing of factual information.

This is an absolute must read for anyone interested in the world of modern intelligence. Very well researched and written.

Excellent quality, price and service. Highly recommended.

So, first of all I'm a PostgreSQL user for 7 years and an instructor for 3 years. I feel that PostgreSQL has one of the absolute best online documentation repos of any open source project. Easy to use and find answers. However, in teaching PostgreSQL administration, I find that there are still quite a few individuals who like a comprehensive introduction to a topic. Quite a few of these individuals like that comprehensive introduction to be in book form. This is a good resource for those individuals.WHAT I LIKE:1) The authors are active in using PostgreSQLIt is obvious from the tone in which the book is written. Small things, like knowing that Amazon's Redshift is a fork of a PostgreSQL fork . . . aren't monumental, but give the authors credibility in my mind since I use Postgres in its community, EnterpriseDB, and Redshift flavors.2) Concise, quick tips for administratorsThere is more to PostgreSQL administration than configuration of the pg_hba.conf, postgresql.conf, and pg_ident.conf files. However, a solid understanding of these will help a new PostgreSQL user troubleshoot 80% of the issues they will likely encounter. A good but brief coverage of these files' formats, psql, and interactive/non-interactive administration are the best reasons for a new admin to buy this book.3) Datatype discussion, including new JSON typesThere has been a lot of buzz in the community regarding the newer JSON data types that some feel make PostgreSQL a serious competitor in both the relational DB world as well as the unstructured data (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc) world. This book gives a great overview of all existing datatypes as well as the new ones available in 9.4.WHAT I DON'T LIKE:1) My preference, but I think the treatment of the PgAdmin tool is too extensive. But my default preference for almost all systems is all command line, all the time.2) DBAs will always ask about replication. I think the chapter on replication is a VERY light treatment of the subject. So, don't buy this book if you expect a step-by-step guide with hints regarding possible problems, workarounds, tests, etc.Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase. I bought this book to evaluate how appropriate it would be to give to my students as a reference manual. I like it for that and I wish I had something like this when I was new to PostgreSQL. If you're an active PostgreSQL DBA or power user, it might be an interesting read, but nothing amazing.

Although this book is a fraction of the size of the documentation, it covers most of what is needed to transition to Postgres from another dialect of SQL. The authors clearly have in-depth experience both with this and with other database applications.I have a few minor gripes. At times, I wanted more detailed explanations. For example, the flags for using pg_dump are complicated. An example used –C –F –b –v –f, but I had to look up each flag separately in an appendix. Knowing that this creates a ‘single, compressed database backup’ isn’t enough.A second gripe was that references to more detailed articles by the authors were given as ‘bit.ly’ URLs which are annoying to type in. Surely they could have taken the trouble to create user-friendly pages on WordPress or, at the cost of a few dollars, put them onto a website dedicated to the book.Overall, however, I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody (except a novice in SQL) who wants to learn more about this powerful object relational database application.

Very helpful and informative book about learning Postgres!I read this over this past Summer, and I can comfortably use Postgres features I'm likely to need, as well as some of the unusual ones I didn't even know SQL programs offered (although, perhaps I should say, "unusual ones Postgres offers", since MySQL, MariaDB, and even Oracle lack some of these features).Postgres has a LOT of interesting and powerful features, and this book will help you to learn them.Of course, with the sheer amount of features Postgres has, you could fill several encyclopaedic volumes, but this book will get you "up and running" with the system and ready to learn any other feature you might happen across and want to try.

If you already know relational databases well and just want an introduction to PostgreSQL then this book is fine. If you are reading the Kindle version it has many links to more detailed or advanced information in blogs, articles, and the PostgreSQL documentation.

As the title suggests this book was instrumental in getting my PostgreSQL environment up and running.

good book

A good, focused guide to PostgreSQL.

A great introduction to the core concepts. After reading this, the stuff in the manual made sense.

First off I love how Isadora and Astra staying as close as sisters the entire book. Isadora is willing to do anything to keep Astra safe including staying in the castle with the Kings. Isadora is definitely a character who has no tolerance for people who think they are better, she stays true to her protector roots. The Kings characters grow and each have a different personality. Love The mystery man at the end and I am curious to see what happens next.

This is a very good start to a new magical world. I am looking forward to all the different pieces starting to come together again n the next book.I love the fact that while the main character is falling in love with her men she still has time for her sister astra and I am curious about Mara and the real reasons the dark world is invading.Overall looking forward to the next book

Paranormal. Rh. 5 guys. The last full blood witch hiding has a null in a magical academy. Full of action. Steamy. Awesome characters and plot. Kick*** heroine. Loved it.

Loved this book!! I can not wait for the next book to be live! Isa is an awesome MC and her men are awesome. Storyline is awesome!

ok start, and great storyline that I absolutely could not put down. I loved the characters, the kings, the best friends, and the world building. My problem, I have two, first I didn't care for isadora, she was strong physically, but mentally weak, lots of self doubt, and she seemed to carry on a lot about how she didn't want to lose her freedom, be a bloodmare, be a queen? She also had many, many breakdowns, and the whole thing about people finding her out? yet she was giving people her full name and using her magic like nothing? For someone who had years of suppressing her magic she all the sudden is being more free with her full blood witch background and showing her cards! Made no sense. I also got super tired of her talking about things she didn't want to happen when no one mentioned any of those things! Her grandma warned her about things that I didn't see one bit happen or take place, she goes on and on about these things that no.one.has.ever.said.to.her! There is way to much crying about absolutely nothing, lots of her rolling her eyes and being a child. It clashed hard with her tough girl show and it didn't work for me. Second, the romance moved way to fast, it made no sense because they knew nothing of each other, only felt the bond by first meeting her. As we go on it's the same, then all the sudden they care for her, it's weird and I wish the author has held off until future books, rushing romance only hurts a read and it definitely felt fake, I got no real chemistry with these characters and this book could have have been a great RH if done right and paced correctly.

I liked this book. It’s a great concept and the notions behind the world in which they live got my imagination roaring. That said, I was still a bit disappointed in the execution of said amazing plot. It suffered from more “tell” than “show”, bogging down the narrative with long winded explanations that could have been better served spread out or eliminated in favor of dialogue or action.Slow burn for harem, medium for individual. MMMMF(M?) CliffhangerPros:- Intriguing world building.- The idea behind the tale is fantastic.- Some parts flow very well.- The twist at the end is quite enjoyable and will mix up the way book 2 progresses.- Honest female friendships, rare in RH.Cons:- tell vs. show.- FMC comes off as cocky, impulsive and demeaning, rather than strong and self assured.- The Kings Lack individuality- A bit confused on world building: obviously different world or dimension, more fantasy, yet there is a mention of a TV and reference to men in black? No background.

Protector is my first book of Serena Nova's. It is a PNR RHThis is a story of the last full blooded witch and the world that needs her. Isadora believes she must remain in hiding so that the people who killed her great grandmother, won't kill her. The book follows Isa through the end of school and into the beginning of a life she never expected or wanted. The four Kings seem to be pulled to her and can hardly wait to make her Queen. All though, I found the book difficult at first, I accepted the ARC challenge from Serena and wanted to complete my job. It didn't take long for the story to start to pick up. About chapter 4 Isafinally steps up and becomes the bad ass the story needed. The characters were believable and well described. The castle setting is a perfect setting. There were times when the settings were difficult to understand and I had to re-read that part or read ahead in the book to understand what had just happened. All in all I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the future of Isa and the Kings.

First lets just say that every one should read this and i do mean every one. You start with Isa(Isadora)and her best friend/sister Astra. The are going to a witch/protector all female school. Isa is pretending to be a protector so people wont kill her. The test for there graduation has change and with it many people got hurt so Isa revealed her self to protect Astra. The test is to determine who will go to the castle and fight to be one the 4 kings queens. Because of what Isa did, her and Astra end up at the castle where they finally meet the kings. Isa learns they are not who she thought they were. And that maybe her grandma was wrong about hiding who she is from every one. Isa ends up against some nasty people who hate her and want her dead. Also she finds out some new things about her self. Plus at the end there is a mysterious 5th guy Isa meets which i cant want to find out more about in book 2. I was disappointed with how the book ended but of course that is what happens when you read a really good book that endsin a cliffhanger. But it is definitely worth the read. Its is a slow burn but with a kick a$$ women like Isa you will love it. Really you should scroll up and get it now :).
