A lot of pages without annoying built in bubbles in the storyline. Would’ve preferred a blank page at the beginning for the book to have a front matter (books title, introduction to author, etc.)

It was given as a birthday present, and my artsy 9-year-old enjoys it so much! So far it has held up well I like that the paper isn't super thin/see-through like some of the other books.

Durable cover, very well made. I bought this for my niece that loves to draw but I find myself wanting to doodle in it. So I might have to buy another one ! Great product I definitely recommend.

About the Author

Makoto Fujimura is an internationally renowned artist, writer, and speaker who serves as the director of Fuller Theological Seminary's Brehm Center for Worship, Theology, and the Arts. He is also the founder of the International Arts Movement and served as a presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003 to 2009. His books include Refractions: A Journey of Faith, Art and Culture and Silence and Beauty. Recognized worldwide as a cultural shaper, Fujimura's work has been exhibited at galleries including Dillon Gallery in New York, Sato Museum in Tokyo, The Contemporary Museum of Tokyo, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts Museum, Bentley Gallery in Arizona, Taikoo Place in Hong Kong and Vienna's Belvedere Museum. In 2011 the Fujimura Institute was established and launched the Qu4rtets, a collaboration between Fujimura, painter Bruce Herman, Duke theologian/pianist Jeremy Begbie and Yale composer Christopher Theofanidis, based on T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets. A popular speaker, Fujimura has lectured at numerous conferences, universities and museums, including the Aspen Institute, Yale and Princeton Universities, Sato Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum. Among many awards and recognitions, Bucknell University honored him with the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2012, and the American Academy of Religion named him as its 2014 Religion and the Arts award recipient. I have mixed feelings about this book. I gave it four stars because just the chapter on Emily Dickenson and Vincent Van Gogh, and their relationship with society and the church was well worth the price to me. The book has other strengths, too. Fujimura does seem to be a bit elitist, as he thinks we should rely on experts from the arts and social sciences to teach us how to understand the arts, including literature and music. I think we could do without that, thank you very much. I did enjoy the sample of his work shared in the beginning of the book. He does lovely art work himself, and he is insightful insofar as the dreadful consequences of the materialistic, utilitarian philosophy that has deluged our culture and the church. As he points out, it's high time we got it together.

Fujimura addresses many issues facing artists, their potential roles in society, evaluates what might or might not be important, and puts forth creative suggestions from principle and his experience. I made a lot of highlights in the book and took notes and will certainly incorporate some of his insights into my life.

This book was motivating and practical at the same time; would recommend it to cultural leaders, makers and artists of all kinds.

Fujimura has some very valuable things to say about culture and cultural stewardship, as well as invaluable insights into the role and value of artists in the community, and how communities can best raise up and support these types of individuals. He writes beautifully of the diversity and inter-dependence of healthy communities, and presents a fantastic model of how Christian communities can effectively interact with the culture and communities around them. This book has definitely changed how I define the role of the Church in shepherding its people with regard to culture.

I stumbled on his previous book quite by chance and loved it. I had to get this one to see if the writing grabbed my attention like the previous book. I was not disappointed. He writes beautifully and thoughtfully on the intersection of art, faith and the act of creating culture and community. Timely messages for our fragile world.

Worth is amazing. Great reporting, great storytelling. A true example of literary journalism at its best.Small quibble: the book picks up at the start of the Arab Spring without giving a lot of details as to what caused it in the first place. Oh, sure, there were lots of people being repressed etc. but, you know, nobody complained before the downturn of the Middle Eastern economy. Start with the price of oil. We think it's repressive regimes versus Islamic fundamentalists and greater and greater factionalism, but these are symptoms. The area is an economic disaster. Petitt's book, "The Crucible of Global War: and the Sequence that is Leading back to It," covers this nicely in the chapter on the Middle East.Again, small quibble. I don't think it was Worth's intention to uncover the reasons so much as report on the effects. And in that, this book is priceless.

Historians are fond of advancing the notion that no major event in human affairs can be fully understood until many years later, when the major actors have passed from the scene and long-suppressed archival records finally come to light. Journalists sometimes dispute this contention, citing their eyewitness accounts and face-to-face interviews with players large and small. Though I’m fond of history and read a good deal of it, I’m sometimes tempted to side with the journalists, if only because contemporary conditions may be best understood by contemporaries. Robert F. It's hard to say that you actually "like" this book, since it's so depressing. We've read 5 or 6 books in the last year or so on the Middle East, for my book club, and they're all pretty depressing, but this one especially. This book focuses on individual relationships within the overall "Arab Spring" timeframe -- two close friends who grew up together in Syria, close relationships formed within the promise of Tahrir Square, etc. He describes the relationships before, during and after the Arab Spring events; in each case, where there were early strong bonds (as in the case of the Syrian friends), or where bonds developed during the street events, these bonds devolved into partisanship, sectarianism, and downright hatred, to the extent that former "friends" were often fighting each other.The one thing that comes out clearly in this book (as in other recent books on the Middle East) is that these hatreds, whether derived from tribalism or religious sectarianism, are way beyond our understanding and ability to influence (other than negatively). The idea of bringing our sort of democracy to this part of the world is both naïve and counter-productive.The book is well-written and researched -- it's clear that the author has spent a lot of time in these countries and spends a lot of it on the street, in cafes and in general, learning to know the people.

A gripping book about the Arab Spring and its aftermath, illustrating these regional dynamics through the lives of individuals. The main impressions I'm left with are (1) that the region is a quite a mess, not because of the citizens but because of the way the citizens are buffeted and brutalized by forces beyond their control, (2) the U.S. makes it messier no matter what we do, and we can't make it better by the way we've been going under Bush, Obama, or anything on offer right now. Wish I knew what the answer was.

I read this book because I wanted to try to understand the birth of ISIS and what has happened in the Arab and Muslim world, post 9-11. It's an engaging read. The author spent a lot of time there on the ground, and he presents a good explanation of tensions and events, country-by-country. My verdict after reading this: it's complicated, violent mess and our mucking around there will only make it worse.(One minor note: in a chronology at the end of the book, he clings to the narrative that the Benghazi attack was due to an offensive video. I think that theory has been pretty well debunked. Minor blemish on the book, though.)

It seems to have some info in a fast way of delivering it to you. BUT this “book” was no more than like 30 pages and it seemed to not have a ton of substance, though it did have some. I don’t know if the other reviews are paid ones or not but I don’t understand how people got so much out of it. It wasn’t really worth the $8. I almost want a refund... live and you learn I guess.

This was simple, clear and concise info. I really enjoyed the suggestions, and I look forward to implementing a few right away. This book is thinner than an sd card. There are 21 ways like the title suggests, but there is absolutely no substance. I bought it on a whim as an add on, and I feel stupid for not realizing what I am purchasing. Dont waste your money.

I wish it covered commercial as well as land deals through local or federal government deals. Thanks for writing this book
