About the Author
Lori Zimmer is a writer and curator who has evolved along side the public art/graffiti community. She is also the creator of popular blog Art Nerd New York, an art history guide to New York City that also provides off beat access to public art, exhibitions and artists’ studios. Since 2009, Lori has been working actively in the art world on many facets, from writing to curatorial projects to advising artists and event planning. Well written and visually immersive exploration of the many applications of spray paint in art. I loved the range of artists featured - I didn't know how many innovative ways spray paint can be used. Hueman and Logan Hicks are especially impressive. I definitely furthered my art education with this book.
Great book for someone who is looking into the history of street art as well as great help to beginners!
This book is great for seeing what spray paint artists do and who they are. There is some instructions on how to do, but it is minimal and really doesn't go into detail. I thought this was going to be a comprehensive book on teaching the techniques of being a street artist, but it is more on showcasing the artists from around the world. If you are looking for ideas, this is a great place to start and my favorite is Hueman (Allison Torneros). Her work is outrageous and can be see either on canvas or side of a building. The artists known as Pichiavo are a duo that push all limits and if you are a real lover of street artists then you have to see their creation on the Northwest Walls, in Werchter, Belgium. Great images by some of the great artists with a spray can. Good book, just wish it had more on the DIY aspect of street art.
If you aren't familiar with the artists in this book but love any work of art made with spray paint, let author Lori Zimmer introduce you to them and their stories. Zimmer's knowledge of art history and insight into the creative process provides an exciting narrative that goes further than just the surface of the dynamic tags, spaces, and murals. It's a great read and a fun way to discover new artists. Plus, it'll make your coffee table a little bit cooler.
This book is amazing on many levels - it's as much a history lesson as it is a guide for the hands-on artist, as it is a insider's look at the medium. I love the writing style as well, Zimmer lays out a lot of information in a smart, informed way. Loving this book!
