Wow, Oh Wow, Oh WOW. I devoured, absolutely DEVOURED this book.Lily White has served us up a wicked, sinful, deviously delightfully story. We meet Rainey, a simple woman who is being interviewed by Justin, a victims advocate told in dual POV. We are taken back to the beginning of just how Rainey became the sole survivor of a brutal slaying. This is a slow burn of a read and there are many layers that need to get peeled back and we are lucky enough to get a front row seat to the life of Rainey. This is where I was in life. Just like Rowan had said. A toy that men ******. A party favor. An entertainment and nothing else.To say the least this is Erotica at its finest. It’s super hot, the sex is sinful and debasing (just how I like my books) but Rainey’s life has so many triggers so if you can put them aside then sit down, buckle up and get ready for a roller coaster of a ride.I have read all of Ms White’s books and this is by far my most favourite of her standalone stories

Holy hell! I’m speechless well not really just sitting here with my mouth open and actually excited. Yeah I know I’m a sick woman but damn this book definitely is one of the best dark books I’ve ever read and I’ve read a ton! “Our love story was a different beast, one filled with insanity, with heartache and misfortune.” My favorite quote from this book but there is soo many it’s hard to choose. This book is dark, intense, gritty and pure insane and I loved every page! The Five is definitely one book I’ll never forget. Warning if your not into dark don’t read it but if you love dark romance and some sick nasty stuff then I bet you will love it as much as I do! 5/5 stars oh and nope not giving any spoilers. Just enjoy Rainey’s story 😈😍😈 TOP DARK READ OF 2019!

It's dark, and the characters aren't altogether likable. You have to decide for yourself if this is the evolution love must take to survive in a world of darkness, or if it morphed from something beautiful into something ugly. All I know is, well, this love survived... against all odds.If you aren't trigger-sensitive, read this book... and try your hardest to go in blind. Lily will make it allllll worth it!

My full review is on GR.Liked -The plot and full of twists.Intriguing characters.Never a dull moment.Suspense is at an all-time high.I loved that it was not the typical Kindle plot.Loved the authors writing, and her way with words. So, creative.Definitely worth reading.Highly addictive.Disliked -The ending. Only because I wanted that sugar-sugarThis is not your average love story.

This story consumed me from start to finish. Loved the unfolding. Some parts were difficult to get through. Disappointed with Justin, but didn’t particularly like his ultimate fate. Side note, had any character in this story ever heard of STDs? Because not a single condom was used in the making of this book.

The Five, is one dark mindfu**ery story of love, death and seduction. Read The Five to learn about Rainey's life and the truth about The Five! When I had to put it down to adult, I couldn't stop thinking about it!! It's a must read!!-Stina, A Woman & Her Books.

Gah!! Freaking phenomenal! Dark and twisted! Could not put it down!! Lily has outdone herself! Brilliantly written and captivating!! Had a realistic feel to it! Heart wrenching story with a twist that will have you glued!! Phenomenal on epic proportions!!

Well, she’s done it again. Lily White has pulled us in to yet answer mind blowing, on the edge of your seat, suspenseful book that somehow still ends with a twisted HEA.Justin is a psychologist who’s been brought in to a murder case by the local police department. He’s been tasked with finding any information on the lone survivor of a brutal murder. But while conducting the interviews, it’s apparent that this survivor has been through hell and solving this case may be harder than he thought.Rainey is the lone survivor. She was found tied to a bed post, bruised and beaten, while four bodies littered the floors of the party house. Although the police have questioned her, she hasn’t answered the questions they really want to know, “what happened in that house”. But she doesn’t have a problem speaking to Justin. In fact, she has a story to tell.Like any suspenseful/mystery read, this took a little bit to set up. Not in a bad way, you’re just not gonna have an “ah ha” moment right off the bat. There is a LOT of sex, drugs and abuse in this though, so full disclosure if you have triggers. Was I able to solve the mystery? Yes. But the way it was discovered was a surprise. And even though I had an idea of what was coming, the journey was so worth it. Especially since the “message” was so great, even in its twisted delivery. I’ll be rereading this soon.

Review

"A thorough, illuminating exploration of the most consequential controversy raging in modern science...[Becker] leads us through an impressive account of the rise of competing interpretations, grounding them in the human stories, which are naturally messy and full of contingencies. He makes a convincing case that it's wrong to imagine the Copenhagen interpretation as a single official or even coherent statement."―New York Times Book Review"In What Is Real? Adam Becker tells a fascinating if complex story of quantum dissidents...An excellent, accessible account."―Wall Street Journal"Becker's book is one of the first attempts we have at telling this story in a way that acknowledges how it actually turned out--acknowledges, that is, who won these debates about the Copenhagen interpretation, who lost them, who pretended otherwise, and how they got away with it.... He has clearly done extensive and meticulous historical research."―David Z. Albert, New York Review of Books"Splendid.... With deeply detailed research, accompanied by charming anecdotes about the scientists...[Becker] hopes to convince us that the Cophenhagen interpretation has had too great an influence on physics for historically contingent reasons."―Washington Post"Becker...make[s] a case for the importance of philosophy. That's a key call, with influential scientists such as Neil deGrasse Tyson dismissing the discipline as a waste of time. What Is Real? is an argument for keeping an open mind."―Nature"A riveting storyteller, Becker brings to life physicists who have too long remained in the shadow of Bohr and Einstein.... What Is Real? offers an engaging and accessible overview of the debates surrounding the interpretation of quantum mechanics."―Science"Impressive...[Becker's] strength is the excavation of stories that show how deeply quantum physics was in thrall to the personalities of its developers. The cast is colourful and expansive, and provides engaging drama...The subtext running through this hugely enjoyable book is that, if we still have a long way to go before we understand reality, we may only have our own prejudices to blame."―New Scientist"A joy to read...For anyone who has been intrigued by other popular accounts of the quantum world but came away feeling somewhat cheated by the Copenhagen sleight-of-hand."―Physics World"Remarkable...What Is Real? is a superb contribution both to popular understanding of quantum theory and to ongoing debates among experts...It deserves wide attention and careful study."―Physics Today"Spellbinding....This very book could prove to be a watershed moment for the physics community if it faces up to its own past and its present....If you have any interest in the implications of quantum theory, or in the suppression of scientific curiosity, What is Real? is required reading. There is no more reliable, careful, and readable account of the whole history of quantum theory in all its scandalous detail."―Boston Review

This book is worth while as there is some interesting history presented and is well written and researched. However, the author’s main underlying purpose is to argue for pilot-wave and/or many-worlds interpretations of quantum mechanics (QM), and to argue against the Copenhagen Interpretation (C.I.). Unfortunately, his obvious bias prevents him from articulating fairly what the C.I. actually was or why it existed,… even implying it was incoherent and adopted en masse due to some conspiracy of personalities, particularly Niels Bohr. This is questionable to say the least as it's not actually confusing as to why the C.I. was adopted en masse; As pointed out to E. Schrodinger at the time, the wavefunction can not be an observable physical entity as he envisioned it, as it evolves in a tensor product space. Therefore, it is quite rational why one would adopt a Born Rule type interpretation of the wavefunction. Both the Born Rule component of the C.I. and the "shut up and calculate" component merely reflects how actual QM experiments must occur. The former on account of the fact that there is only one measurement result despite a possible superposition of states as described via the wavefuncion, and the latter on account of the fact that no one can actually have a wavefunction description of himself and the experimental apparatus. Another rational reason why the C.I. was adopted en masse, was that the standard Hilbert space mathematical foundation of QM with von Neumann's projection postulate (wavefunction collapse) was able to unify both the matrix mechanics of Heisenberg and the wave formulation of Schrodinger. Certainly a general scientific positivist mentality was a great influence in motivating C.I. at the time as well.... as it should have. The author briefly mentions twice that Bohr was influenced by Kant, but remarkably never attempts to explain Kant’s epistemology.Considering Bohr’s interpretational contributions to quantum theory, Abraham Pais, nuclear physicist and renowned biographer and physics historian, stated that Bohr was “one of the most important twentieth century philosophers,…. As such he must be considered the successor to [Immanuel] Kant,…”.Essentially, the C.I. argument was that the measurement problem is epistemic in nature, and therefore not a problem with the theory itself. In other words, the discontinuity between the deterministic evolution of the wavefunction via the Schrodinger equation, and the “collapse” to a measurement result, is on account of the conditions of observability given the nature of mind. Which is to say, we must supply a conceptual form in which the ‘underlying reality’ is to be observed in the first place. In the standard Hilbert space formulation of QM, the Operator and Basis are supplied by the physicist given the particular experimental arrangement and interpretation of results. So, if one is so inclined to imagine a de facto metaphysical ‘underlying reality’, one can see that this supposed reality is projected or conformed to, our a-priori conceptual framework, in order to meet the conditions of observability…. by a mind so constituted, given its evolution to synthesize experience on the macroscopic scale…. i.e. "it" is only a particle or a wave to the extent that those notions are defined by the experimental apparatus and interpretations thereof. And no, an epistemic interpretation does not mean that consciousness ‘reaches out’ as it were and interacts physically with the quantum system to cause collapse of the supposed physical wavefunction. There was some historical confusion on this point. We’re talking about a biological system evolved at the macroscopic scale with it’s own emergent laws, processing experience to form a synthesis for the understanding, which since this mind is NOT omnipotent, must of necessity have conditions for observability to be at all possible. This precludes knowledge of ‘independent reality’ because intellectual artifacts or 'conceptual forms of thought' are always implicit in the experimental arrangement, presumptions, and interpretations....“There is no way to remove the observer — us — from our perception of the world, which is created through our sensory processing and through the way we think and reason. Our perception — and hence the observations upon which our theories are based — is not direct, but rather is shaped by a kind of lens, the interpretive structure of our brains.”- Stephen Hawking“The doctrine that the world is made up of objects whose existence is independent of human consciousness [mind] turns out to be in conflict with quantum mechanics and with facts established by experiment." - Bernard d'EspagnatThe author does not state that the pilot-wave for multiple particles, evolves in a tensor product space, which is to say not in our 3 dimensional space, and therefore is in principal unobservable. Likewise, the many-worlds are in principal unobservable. Despite suggestions to the contrary in the book, this is entirely different from Mach’s view that atoms are metaphysical on account of not observing them,… as in principal, atoms could be observed or rationally hypothesized given observable attributes. Metaphysical entities are precisely those that are intrinsically unobservable, like the pilot-wave or multiverse. In contrast, an epistemic interpretation does not propose unscientific metaphysics, but rather artifacts of thought, which IS in principal investigable as the field of epistemology. It’s just that the problem extends beyond physics, and into a field that is undeveloped. See “John von Neumann’s Cut” to substantiate this point.Since all interpretations of QM are empirically indistinguishable, it becomes a Choice of the theoretician which is to be his guide,… and therefore are epistemic in any case.I don’t feel that the author presents the interpretation of the Bell inequality tests entirely fairly; The empirical failure of the Bell inequalities refutes ‘local realism’, by which is meant that at least one of the following implicit assumptions are refuted,… locality, counterfactual definiteness [Stapp, Eberhard], or no conspiracy condition. The Copenhagen Interpretation was philosophically aligned with the rejection of counterfactual definiteness, …i.e. that elements of reality or attribute values exist independently of measurement,… or more properly, that for statistical purposes it is valid to presume measurements that could be, but have not been performed (this would have been rejected by C.I.). The author seems to imply that no such assumption is made in the Bell tests, despite that it is the very point of the Bell tests to presume this,…. resulting in the conclusion that no such classical presumptions of hidden variables can reproduce the results of quantum mechanics, given Einstein locality. The generalized Bell theorem, however, makes no assumptions with respect to the form of the quantum entity or attributes being measured (particle, wave, spin, polarization, position, momentum, etc). The author is correct to say that philosophy is important in physics as at minimum a guide for theoretical research and interpretation of results. The author is also correct to point out Quine’s thesis that verification or falsification can not be done in isolation, free and clear of any presumptions and interpretations, thus refuting the extremism of logical positivism. However, Quine did not refute scientific positivism nor verification nor falsification as valid and essential guides for physicists,….. as if he managed to crack the door open such that it was then legitimate for metaphysics to infect science. The many-worlds formulation is itself an extremism of mathematical idealism, in that it essentially lets the mathematics of the wavefunction solutions of the Schrödinger equation supplant the work of the theoretician."As far as laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality" - A. EinsteinNot mentioned in the book as well is that the C.I. has since been revised with decoherence, in the consistent histories interpretation,… “Copenhagen done right”.A few general-reader books by prominent physicists that speak out against metaphysical speculation in physics and cosmology are,...-The Trouble With Physics: The Rise of String Theory, The Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next - Lee Smolin-Fashion, Faith, and Fantasy in the New Physics of the Universe - Roger PenroseAn excellent and fairly unbiased exposition of the various interpretations of QM....Beyond Measure - Jim Baggott

This volume is the single best explication to the general reader of the historical progression of foundational issues in QM that has ever been written. In addition---1. The author really understands the measurement problem.2. The author really understands what Einstein's criticisms were and they were NOT about randomness.3. The author really acknowledges that Bohr was spewing out inane baloney from the early 20's onward. It is impossible to cover all foundational issues in depth in 300 pages, but the author covers everyone from Einstein, Bohr, Schrodinger, Heisenberg, de Broglie through Bohm, Everett, Bell, Clauser, Aspect, GRW, Zeh and beyond. What sets this volume apart from other surveys is the author's grasp on the key differences in interpretational issues, e.g. something as simple as the difference between 'incomplete' and 'inaccurate' or as complex as locality+incompleteness vs non-locality+(maybe)completeness.I could go on and on but why waste any more of your time. Just go and buy it.FIVE STARS

This book is very timely. With many Physicists opening the door to Quantum Foundational issues and wanting to know the true underlying reality, not content with merely shutting up and calculating, this book will be a supplement in any library concerning the history of Quantum Physics and the so called dissidents of the Copenhagen Interpretation mainly in David Bohm's Pilot-Wave Theory and Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation but also though smaller GRW, in addition too as well John S. Bell.Part I: This was a good start concerning the Copenhagen Interpretation and its founders. Also early dissidents like Einstein and Schrödinger. I think this book is very lay friendly and easy to follow along concerning the theory and early issues with it. You also find that there really was no singular Copenhagen Interpretation despite Heisenberg giving them a singular label. Also you start to see how politics and social issues really helped launch Copenhagen. I learned how charismatic Bohr was yet how his very own students said he had issues with comprehension but also how vague he was and how people like Heisenberg despite not being a Nazi supported Nazi Germany (indeed Pascual himself was a Nazi), you see how bad Heisenberg was with experimental physics despite his somewhat confidence in German physics above others. Einstein by contrast to these men took on no students as Bohr, as he wasn't as charismatic and though spoke well, sometimes he was misunderstood such as in the case with Bohr or the when others wrote on his behalf but not in as clear a way as he would have, he also wrote longer statements than say Bell and he helped the U.S. in the Nuclear Race.Part II: This is where the major dissidents who made rival theories to Copenhagen appear but also others like Bell who advanced the conversation and gave scathing critics. These include mainly David Bohm and Hugh Everett. You find just how exiled Bohm was mainly for his communist affiliation but also for going against the status quo in the Copenhagen Interpretation. Also how Everett was with his prankster style yet sort of nonchalant attitude (interestingly you learn that Wheeler would try to help him get it out there and that Everett never cared to be an Academic but was content as a Cold War technocrat). Bohm would later abandon Communism but also his own Interpretation due to these many factors.Part III: Here is where the story continues and the next generations picked up where the former one's left off. You get to see how Bohm picked up his own Theory and revived it again thanks to Basil Hiley and some students. And others who advanced the Many-Worlds Interpretation of Everett as well. Moreover many others who advanced Bell's inequalities via experiment. This chapter was very helpful as many of these figures are hardly as known to a more lay audience such as Dieter Zeh and John Clauser and others. Very informative. Also GRW Theory makes an appearance along with David Albert. You see throughout this book how changes due to Social and Political issues affected many of these men, some not even having a job despite their importance in these Foundational Issues and how many did not give them a chance but in the end they made an impact unto today.I also found Adam Becker's comments on Philosophy to be extremely needed and he rightly went against the notion that Philosophy is dead or of lesser importance but it is precisely these historical and social issues that pushed this wrong idea of Philosophy it seems into Academia to the chagrin of people like Einstein who held it in high esteem. This was a pleasant suprise to me. The issues concerning the "Shut up and Calculate!" approach he also addresses as problematic which I was very pleased with as well. The last part an Appendix was concerning how these different Theories (including GRW) solve the Delayed-Choice experiment which is a very much discussed topic at least to a more lay audience and was very glad to see it included. The only 2 minor problems I had with the book is that a lot of the stuff on Nazi Germany seemed to not be important concerning the history of these realist dissident interpreations. However it was still very fascinating and had very import things in it still, like how this War affected the Physics community and to learn more concerning the personal lives of these men who are often adored. The last issue was the footnotes. Since the book itself doesn't give you an inserted number reference in the text as you are reading it makes it hard to know if you need to check for one. I practically even forgot about them throughout the book however he does give a ton of references to practically everything in there which is extremely helpful.Despite these small gripes, this is a book certainly needed. If you don't have it, make sure to add it to your collection, it is a must have.

This magnificent book is a fascinatingjourney among a variety of spiritual traditions which can be broadly encompassed under the name of Bengali Shaktism. The Introduction provides a `classification'of various Shakta types. Albeit a bit artificial(these categories should be not taken rigidly becausemuch overlapping is possible), the use of these `strands'in the book is a useful tool to emphasizeand appreciate the profound differences existingbetween various Shakta types. Most important, from the anthropological perspective, is the evidenceprovided in the First Chapter of some surviving types ofBengali Shaktism (Folk Shaktism) among the so-called`tribals' or Adivasis (i.e., those who were in theland first) which are obviously completely outside the mainstreamof traditional Hinduism. They are `outside' from the scripturalperspective, mythological perspective, and ritual perspective.Yet, they are Hindus.Under the name of `folk' Shaktism the Author reports a complex set of believes incorporated into Hinduism, but still preservingmemories and a heritage of an incredibly ancient, pre-Hindu, past. The remnant of a Shamanic component, [after Eliade's seminalwork, Shamanism cannot be possibly regarded with contempt, as itwas a century ago] is extremely fascinating andindirect proof of enormous Antiquity. The existence of forms of Hinduism among Bengali tribalswhich have a surprisingly different mythology,is a profound evidence of how rich and variedand intrinsically encompassing true Hinduism is.Hinduism can incorporate infinite amountof varieties within, some philosophical (just considerthe immense amount of contrasting philosophicalliterature produced during the Puranic age) and some,as in the case of Adivasi Shaktism, ethnic and regional. The Second Chapter emphasizes a Sanskrit-based Shakta Tradition, and those texts in particular that have contributedto create it, such as the Kularnava Tantra. It is important to stress how the `Tantric', Kaula tradition in the sense in which it is understood in Bengal is oftenmisunderstood, misjudged and slandered outside of Bengal. This, I suspect, may be a remnant of last centuries foreign dominations(Shaktism was the less tolerated of the various schools of Hinduism)but this is not necessarily the opinion supported by the Author, who reports the problem but does not speculate on historical causes. The third chapter summarizes the version of Skaktismbased on a `bhakti' sentiment, bearing some similarityperhaps with Vaishnava, Krishna-centered Bhakti, except thatit is focused on Kaali, Durgaa, or regional varietiesof Hindu Devis. I find this section particularly fascinatingbecause it fills a gap in the western literature. Whereasbooks on the Sanskrit Shaktism, from Woodroffe's onwards, are available in the west, it is perhaps more difficultto access documents on the immense amount of religiousliterature produced in Bengali. This literature rangesfrom the Mangal-Kavyas, [particularly appealing isthe beautiful story of the Goddess Manasaa, on which a comparativemythologist could perhaps write an entire encyclopedia!]to the moving biographies of the many Shakta saints. This chapter,by documenting such vast amount of Bengali literature,is truly a homage to the vast spiritual and culturalheritage of Bengal. The Fourth Chapter discusses in greater detail theimportance of Durgaa and Kaaliin Bengal. Albeit fascinating, this Chapter isperhaps not unique, for there are several other books on this subject, and on Durga Puja specifically, available in the English language. The Fifth chapter is an attempt to describe someof the changes imposed on Shaktism when incorporatedin New Age believes. The Author reports some of these appropriationswith an attempted cold, dispassionate and scholarly style, but there seems to be an occasional underlying polite irony, whensomewhat hilarious quotations from Authors such as Selby or Condron areinserted. On the other hand, I personally foundthe report of a former student of the Author, who felt a profound call towards Durgaa, to bevery impressive and convincingly `real'.I think that a few points should be emphasized:The Author seems to suggest that some of the Shaktatraditions are endangered, and may disappear soon. This applies to both the Sanskrit-based tradition(Kaula Tantra), and to the Shakta traditions of the Adivasi.A coalition of opposers, coming partly from the Communist Bengaligovernment, partly from an attitude sadly nourished bysome Orthodox Hindus, partly because of a secularisttendency within India which is taking its aim on Shaktismparticularly, seems to converge against the Shaktas.Particularly sad is the report that many Adivasisperceive the role of Indians from the central governmentas a form of `colonialism'. This feeling (which has beensuccessfully exploited by foreign missionaries inother States such as Tripura or Nagaland where many Adivasis havebeen converted to Christianity and have therefore lost their ancestralspiritual knowledge forever) is a serious problem and should betaken very seriously by all Hindus of all traditions, beVaishnavas, Shaivas, Skaktas or Smartas... if they don't wanta precious part of the Hindu heritage disappear.Hinduism has been among the most tolerantreligions *because* it does not consider a problem to worship the Divineunder many aspects. What appears to be contradictoryin our limited minds is not such from the perspectiveof the Divine. To have Myths in which oneGod does not appear in a favorable light as in otherMythological Sources shows the complexity, the variety, the immense amount of possibilities of the Human Pathstowards the Divine. That beyond the humans, Apsaras,Yakshas, Asuras, Devas and Devis exist aSubstance, or a `Condition', be it called Atman, Brahman, or Shakti, from which All is made, is one fundamental Hindu belief. Thatthe -particular- path one chooses, or the particularDeities one chooses to worship, will lead there,as long as one follows the Dharma with sincerity and devotion,is also a Hindu tenet. On this matter, I need to comment on a coupleof Reviewers who, in my opinion, have used unnecessarilyharsh words against the Author. It is certainly truethat some western Authors write on Hinduism withlittle knowledge, and is even truer that some western Authorshave profoundly slandered the Hindus. But I strongly believethat these accusations should not be brought against Dr. McDaniel. To document Shakta traditions which do not depict Shiva as depicted inthe Shaiva Puranas is -not- an insult to Shiva, as one negativeand very superficial Reviewer suggests. Nor it means that theAuthor endorses specifically any of these traditions. It is insteadsimply an attempt to provide information on existing, little known, aspects of that multiform planet named Hinduism. Hinduismis immensely rich -because- such traditions exist, and the tendency of eradicating un-orthodox traditions, so dominant in other religions, has never really appealed -so far- the Hindu mind.As for accusing the Author of `ignorance', I reallybelieve that is a perplexing accusation. The reviewer who thinks so,should perhaps scroll the reference and notelist, [which encompasses Maha- and UpaPuranas, Tantric Sanskrit text, medieval Bengali literature (Mangalkavyas), a vast amountof scholarly books and articles written by Indian scholars, often in Bengali] and compare it with references in otherbooks on Hinduism published in the West.As for accusing the Author of being disrespectful to Hinduism, the last page of her Conclusions shows very clearly hersympathy and her love for India and the Indian culture.Quite an unexpectedl conclusion for a book which a Revieweraccuses to be offensive to Hinduism, indeed.I am not a scholar of Hinduism, but I have continuouslynourished an interest in Hinduism for 30 years, andon Shaktism for the last 10 years. I can surelysay that I found an immense amount of information inProfessor McDaniel's book, which is a precious addition to my library on Hinduism.

Professor McDaniel's "Offering Flowers" presents an exhaustively researched but eminently readable overview of the religious and spiritual practices of the women of rural Bengal. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to learn more about Indian culture as it manifests itself outside of the institutionalized forms. An enjoyable and vivid journey back in time -- or maybe outside of time -- to a place where religious beliefs and rituals are still directly connected to the tangible natural world.

This book is a great way to understand the worship of the great goddess Kali. I like the fact that the written has given varies examples of her worhip through out india. I think it's a great book for people who would like to get to know the goddess Kali.

i prefer not to write negative feedbacks but this book deserved a real one...I got this book thinking that it would be a good collection of the objective reviews about goddess worshiping in India by a "professor" - and it was printed by a respectable publisher, what else would i want for a good reference? On the contrary the book turned out to be full of wrong notions.just a very small excerpt for you to understand what i mean;"He (Shiva) became blue-throated after drinking poison in an unsuccesful suicide attempt, for he could no longer stand the hunger and poverty he had to endure" p 172 from the book "offering flowers feeding skulls"Either the author did not read the indian scriptures (Ms McDaniel; if you are reading this review, at least read "shiva puranas" before attempting to write about Shiva) or she is having some second thoughts... in any case, the shame is on her.Not only her, shame on Oxford University Press, too. I thought they have good editors and they *read and understand* the manuscript before they publish...

This book shows anybody with a little knowledge about anything can write a book and at least can make some money out of it.This book clearly shows the author's inability to understand hindu and his attempt to interpret it it the way he wanted to.It is in many ways an insult to Hindu.

I'm not sure what the rave reviews are about. I found the pictures grainy and lacking in clarity and the book very frenetic; there would be an intro page about a neighborhood and then only 3 or 4 pages of pictures. I didn't feel like I got a sense of the neighborhood or city before being forced onto the next section. It wasn't a slow perusing coffee table book like I expected. Instead, it just came off as someone who but together an Artifact Uprising photo book from their Instagram stream. I was pulled in by the cover, but the body just didn't deliver. Will be returning.

This is a book of instagram photos, tiny snapshots of prettily colored buildings and signs, but with no sense of the place or the people, and no captions or commentary to elaborate. The color palette is lovely, yes, but this isn't really "seeing" San Fransisco. After looking through this book, I now know exactly as much about this fabled city as I knew before. Glad I bought it second hand!

i bought this, it got lost and then amazon sent me a replacement right away. so that was extremely great.but the book itself, i wasnt too crazy about it.the pictures are nice but it wasnt what i thought it would be and overall i would have been okay getting a refund.

Read the one star review after ordering the book so I was a tad worried. However I’m pleased to say, I love the book! I live in sf so it’s an interesting take written by a local who lives in noe valley. Love my new coffee table book!

As soon as I heard Victoria Smith (sfgirlbybay) was working on a book with Chronicle books, I knew it would be amazing. Beautiful photography in her signature style showing all the neighborhoods, this book is sure to give you a new point of view of the city.

Beautiful book of a one of the most photogenic cities on earth. Victoria has a unique view point and a wonderful sense of design in her images and juxtapositions. Great gift especially for anyone you know who might be missing SF.

Very nice quality print with tons of information and vivid pictures. This was bought as a gift and was very appreciated.

Very nice book to have if you love San Francisco and wish to see another point of view. It's interesting to see what catches the attention of this photographer.Another book I can recommend if you like this one is Paris in Color.
