Beautiful and simple book for children to learn some of the names and meanings of God. I gave it as a gift and they loved it.

Excellent! Purchased as gifts

Beautiful all around. Walks through salvation history while simultaneously teaching about several names of God (in Hebrew and English), and on top of that the images are GORGEOUS. Our kids love it and so do we. And we’ve bought it as a gift for several other families. 👍💗

Great way to introduce names of God

Great book with colorful illustrations

ages 2-4 appropriate

I was thrilled when this book (I Am: The Names of God for Little Ones by Diane Stortz, illustrated by Diane Le Feyer) arrived for me to review. When I read it to my toddler, she loved it and started calling it her "Jesus book." You can probably tell from the title of this book that it tells a little about several names of God: God the Father and God the Son. It has a nice distribution of names from throughout the Bible. However, I did find a few problems with this book:Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide. In the Bible, God reveals this name to Abraham when he almost sacrifices his son Isaac but does not because God provides a ram as a substitute. However, in this book, the author implies that all this name means is that God will provide us with food and take care of us. This name means so much more! God doesn't just give us food, but He supplied us with a sacrifice to take our place so we will not be punished for our sin.Jehovah Rophe, the Lord Who heals. The story with this one is when Naaman is healed in the Jordan River. But the Lord revealed this name to the Israelites when He made bitter water sweet at Marah (Exodus 15). Although the author used a different story to illustrate the name of God, I don't think it dilutes the meaning at all.Rabbi, Teacher. This pages tells about how Jesus taught about God, but Jesus is God! It makes it seem like He isn't. The author should have made a distinction that Jesus taught about God the Father.Don't get me wrong about this book, please! I enjoyed this book, and I'm glad to have added it to our library. The criticisms I found are fairly small, some may say nitpicky. But I like and expect accuracy in my books about the Bible for me and for my children. All of the negatives about this book, which aren't many, are completely taken care of by the pages about Jesus as Savior and King of Kings. This book clearly relates that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead. And my favorite page of all was the last one when Jesus will return and make Heaven and Earth new. What hope this page gives to us and our children!I will continue to read my daughter her "Jesus book" because it is just that good.I want to thank BookLook Bloggers for my review copy of this book, but my opinions are my own.

I am always on the lookout for bedtime books that I think my daughter might like that also do a great job in sparking a conversation about who God is. So when I saw this title, a kids book unpacking the names of God, I jumped on it.I AM: The Names of God is written by Diane Stortz and is illustrated by Diane Le Feyer.I AM covers twelve different names for God, including: Creator (Elohim), I AM (Jehovah), Teacher (Rabbi), and Friend. Each name is illustrated over two pages with a few verses of scripture and a short one sentence prayer. My daughter and I have read this book many times and from the very first reading she was glued to the content. She especially loves to repeat God’s names back to me and I love how simple yet profound the one sentence prayers are.Another great feature about this book is that if you are short on time, you can simply read the book through and it will be a very quick read, but if you have the time and want to have a really meaningful conversation about God with your child, this book is a great resource for that.As for the illustrations, they are very colorful and vibrant and my daughter seems to enjoy them. The illustrator is an incredible artist and has done an outstanding job creating visuals that bring to life the passages of scripture given for each of God’s names.Overall I think this is a solid children’s book and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great book to open up a conversation about God with their child.

I am coming to believe that, as followers of Christ, part of our spiritual growth—perhaps even a rite of passage—involves at least one crisis of faith. I am at such a crucial place right now as I wonder if God is big enough to overcome the massive difficulties I face each day. When I came across Nik Ripkin’s book, The Insanity of God: A True Story of Faith Resurrected, I knew I needed to read it. And I’m glad I did.Nik Ripkin (not his real name to protect his contacts) took his family to Africa to work as missionaries and relief aid workers. They moved around in Africa some, before landing in Somolia during the 1990s—before, during, and after the infamous war that brought US and UN soldiers into the land devastated by tribal gang wars.Nik and his family left Somolia exhausted and discouraged. Not long thereafter, their son died and they were devastated. Feeling they had given all they could give, they returned to the US for a time of healing. The question Nik continued to ask was, “Can God make a difference in a place like Somolia?”He set out on what was intended to be a two-year mission to visit Christians around the world who lived under persecution and learn from them what he could take back to Somolia. His endeavor, however, became a full-time ministry for life.Speaking to Christians who were imprisoned in Russia, China, Asia and other unnamed places, he learned that God is alive and working much has he did in the New Testament, when persecution was normal and the absence of it was a sign something was wrong. As Nik Ripkin spent time with persecuted Christians, his dying faith was resurrected. Despite the persecution they had suffered, persecuted Christians were characterized by joy.The testimonies in The Insanity of God encouraged me, too. It helps put things in perspective and makes you realize what’s important and how we (in the West) have become complacent because of our freedom and ease. It’s a wake-up call, for sure, but more like waking up to sweet music that makes you glad to get up and do something. The writing style was very easy to read. The stories were told with sensitivity, emotion, and a dose of humor at times. And telling stories of persecuted Christians can be difficult, but he minimized the graphic details and maximized the details about believers determined to remain loyal to God at any cost and how they counted it a privilege to suffer for Christ. This review, with additional book quotes, first appeared on my blog, ChristyBower.com.

To be perfectly honest, the first third of the book is a hard go. The grinding poverty, the unmitigated greed and the bare face of evil the author faced on his initial mission along side of the growing doubt that he was making any sort of impact at all almost had me put the book down a couple of times. I quite frankly wondered what all the glowing reviews were talking about. In hindsight, I think he did a wonderful job of conveying HIS sense of despair by passing it on to the reader. KEEP READING THE BOOK. Unless your heart is made of stone, you will find the pages hard to see at times (some sort of a mist or something), in the chapters that follow. This book deeply challenged my very definition of what it means to be a Christian in a country where we take our religious freedoms as granted, with nary a thought that the situation in this country might be changing and not for the better. Stick with Nik till the end; you will be a better person and perhaps have a more Christ-centered, realistic view of what it truly means to call yourself "a Christian".

The title "Insanity of God" is provocative. Most insane was that these Christian believers do not rise up to fight a holy war. They do not force their faith on anyone. They just live out their faith quite quietly with a Bible, not a bayonet! They choose to live their lives to the end true to their faith instead of chopping someone else head and ending an innocent life.Larry King once said, people believe in God because they fear -- death. He also said when there is no death, there will be no fear, and there will be no God. Reading this book, I have come to a conclusion that we are the ones who fear exactly because we have no faith, and because we have no God -- no God like the One these Christians believe in. We are afraid of losing anything dear to us because we have no God to make up for our losses. As a result, we give in to fear quickly and we compromise with our dreaded enemies. Like Larry King, the majority of us deep down think that God is unnecessary or that God makes us weak, which explains, rather ironically, the weakness shown nowadays in the West that have always believed to be strong. These believers, however, show me just the opposite: Indeed they look so weak, being persecuted, but in fact, they are strong in faith and their faith has been tested in the killing fields, not in a studio! They tell me, by their lives and by their death, that with God, there is no death, and there is no fear! Faced with a choice in every dire situation, they choose not to fear death, but fear God. Their lives bring to mind what Sydney Carton said before his execution in the last chapter in Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.

This is a review of Hidden Wisdom by Smoley and Kinney. The subtitle of the book is A Guide to the Western Inner Traditions.Overall, I liked the book, and it was well written for the most part. My only real problem with it is that it often left me wanting to know more on the various traditions it covered. That might actually be a good thing depending on one's point of view, however. Also, the authors did supply lists of Suggested Reading at the end of each chapter where more relevant information could be found. There were 12 chapters, each on a different tradition or different set of related traditions. There was quite a range, starting with Jung and the Unconscious and ending with the New Age. Lots of useful and interesting background was provided, along with explanation of the main points of the traditions.Reading this book inspired me to make further investigation into 3 of the traditions covered. I'll get started on that very soon.

I am sure this is a great book for someone already familiar with the various religions, philosophies and so on that this book refers to it but is not a good book for someone without that background. There are so many terms that I was not familiar enough with to understand that the reading/listening to this book was extremely frustrating. I tried but could not get past chapter 5 due to my frustration.

A wonderful book. Well written, thoughtful, well researched. Smoley, the former editor of the magazine, Gnosis, has written an excellent introductory overview of some of the main themes of the Western mystery traditions such as gnosticism, alchemy and hermeticism, kabbalah, shamanism, and esoteric Christianity. Each of the 12 chapters explores a different topic and serves as an excellent springboard for deeper more serious study of the subject. The subjects are well-researched but not scholarly in tone. An enjoyable read for the casual reader and a useful preliminary resource for a more serious student.

Richard Smoley and Jay Kinney have produced a book that gives a person an excellent over view of the different strands that compose the western esoteric tradition. They're writing is factual and balanced. The suggested reading at the end of each chapter provides people with an excellent jumping off point for further study.

For anyone interested in the unseen world, theology and the people who traverse and writeabout it all, this book is the ticket..Smiley ties together famous figures, historical events and relevant topicsyou may know a bit about yet feel the need for more knowledge.Smiley, a Seeker par excellence, offers you his invaluable peek into the worldwe all guess at, beyond everyday experience.

I wouldnt buy it again -

Smoley is one of the clearest and coherent writers on the Western Esoteric tradition and one can not pick a better introductory text than this, even for one familiar with the esoteric tradition this is a good general reference and the recommened reading list is excellent as well.

Good overview with annotated bibliography. Very valuable for all seekers. Practical advice given is also very useful.
