Spine of the World focuses on Wulfgar, a character who died at the apex of the third round of Drizzt novels, brought back from the Abyssal torture chambers of a the major Demon, Ertuu. Wulfgar finds alcohol, sex and corporal punishment in the pirate city of Luskan. Salvatore explores new depths of grotesquery and savagery in the Prisoner’s Carnival, as well as exercising his hand at harlequin romance of the aristocracy of Auckney.It’s great for some barroom brawling scenes (which have a history of taking over gaming sessions when the party is just supposed to meet a contact for drinks), and the characterization of Jaka Sculi, the dour but romantic peasant who fathers an illegitimate child of a noble lord and tragicomically falls off a cliff at his lover’s wedding. I confess the first time I read this book years ago, I skimmed most of the Auckney scenes and the interior monologues of Wulfgar’s post traumatic stress, which is most of the book plus the “journal of Drizz’t†which is often ponderous rehash. Coming back to it years later, Spine of the World is a pivotal volume for the series but also for the writer’s intention to expand his range of writing styles and subjects using Forgotten Realms and his Icewind Dale characters as his platform.
This entire book is a snore-fest. Granted we all knew the mighty wulfgar needed to be humbled. But a whole book dedicated to him being a bumbling, drunken fool is a waste of my time.
While I've been a big fan of the Drizzt books I did not enjoy this one, mostly because Drizzt wasn't even in it. I am happy for Wulfgar and his return from his dark place but I didn't at all care for Merelda or her story at all.
In this book, R. A. Salvatore takes us through two different plot lines, both completely different in nature than the previous books in the series.The book tells a captivating story of growth and redemption, as the characters evolve in a manner that is surprising and yet realistic.I think that in many ways, this book outshines many of its predecessors in the series.
This is the tale of Wulfgar coming to terms with his inner demons after his six-year stint under the tortuous Erttu. Drizzt and Co. are not in this book even briefly. The main storyline of the Crystal Shard and Jarlaxle is set aside for this story, so you don't get much as far as overall progression here. Maybe Salvatore felt guilty about leaving Wulfgar out of so much of the Legacy series that he figured he needed a whole book of his own. Some parts of the book are great, but this one just doesn't have the magic of the earlier Drizzt books.The story consists of two separate plot-lines that briefly come together near the end of the book. Wulfgar and Morik (who develops nicely here) are framed, get beat, leave Luskan, fight, are framed, get beat, and so on. The other story was actually the more intriguing to me. It involves characters that we've never met before and their emotional wrangling. A hi-bred lord courts a lowly peasant (Meralda), who goes along with it for her family's sake but makes a big mistake in getting knocked up by another man. The two stories come together in an unpredictable way that results in a hugely surprising and satisfying ending.Overall, this book is disappointing but can't be avoided if you're reading the whole series.
I bought it for my husband so I cannot as of yet comment on the content of the book, but I am assured it holds up to the rest of Salvatore's books. The book itself arrived in fantastic condition, perfect dust jacket and no issues with the pages.
Can it get any better than that! !!!! HELL YES I SAY. Bring it on Mr Salvatore. Bring it on. Never have I read such magic put down on paper. How many times have I wanted to strangle this "Storyteller" for what he has done to the Companions of the Hall. Reunion I say. Reunion.
More enjoyable towards the end. Everything ties up nicely and it gives Wulfgar a story of redemption which is done very well by Mr. Salvatore. Personally not a fan of the side story but it made you feel good once you finish the whole story. FYI, Drizzt, Cattie-Brie, Bruenor, nor Regis are apart of this book.
