I read this book in one sitting as it seemed to put me back in Queens, New York thinking about the times of playing basketball as a youth. As most kids living in Queens in the 80s and loving basketball, they dreamed about playing for a team like St John's basketball. This author explains about growing up and learning the game from his dad to eventually take it to the next level. Things don't necessarily go his way but the author's dedication and heart allow him to follow his dreams. The author's knowledge of the game and attention to detail provide a perfect visual of what it's like to be in the game and experiencing it all.Throughout the book lessons are learned and friendships forged all of which provide a path for the author to continue to do what he loves which is playing basketball. The learning, rejection and perseverance mold the person he becomes so that he can then become a leader himself. Family and friends guide him on his way in what can be described as a dream come true in having basketball as life and then sharing that life with others.
This was a good read with enduring lessons for any parent - especially those with aspiring athlete children. The author serves as a great example of what is possible when you love what you do and never quit. The emphasis on telling your kids that you love watching them play and making sure they have fun in their athletic endeavors is much needed today. And the author shows that can also prove a winning philosophy! Also enjoyed the lessons and love shared with his Father. Buy this. Buy it for your kids. Or better yet read it with them TOGETHER and share the experience.
Such an inspiring perspective into the life of a coach and the world of high school/college basketball. I could not help the flood of emotions that filled my being during many of the stories shared. Growing up In Queens, our family love of the Mets, and a current parent of Hills West children added to the emotions I felt. I enjoyed this book immensely. I have a new appreciation for the selflessness of a high school coach. That so many teens have and continue to be impacted by Coach Mitaritonna’s leadership and example is a blessing. The value of young people to know their passion, work hard, and to believe in themselves are only a few of the takeaways here. This book should be a required read for both students and parents ! Although not a coach I learned a few helpful concepts I can use in my leadership role at work- what an added bonus to a read I thoroughly enjoyed. At the end of each of our stories we leave a legacy-Coach Mitaritonna’s is creating one he can be extremely proud of.
More than a story about basketball, this is an inspiring tribute to a father by a son who followed his advice and achieved more than he could have ever hoped. This beautiful memoir is about the people and relationships that sustain us and the lessons we apply that help us triumph over adversity. With the backdrop of Queens, NY in the 1980s and 1990s, the author eloquently describes growing up and forging strong bonds in a diverse community during a volatile time and place. Billy Mitaritonna's memoir is the perfect story to inspire athletes, families, coaches, parents, and teachers.
As someone who grew up in Queens and followed high school basketball I couldn't put this book down. Bills incredible journey from his struggle to crack the roster at Molloy to playing at Westbrook and SJU are remarkable. The foundation for this book are his bond with his parents and to see how he has passed that down to his students , his athletes and his own children are inspiring. I recommend this book to everyone from parents to young athletes who want to learn from someone who made it on hard work and determination.
Brought back memories of New York and basketball. I'm a Villanova guy but always had a soft spot for St. John's. Bought the paperback and sending it to my basketball-crazy grandson in CT. By the way, the book isn't only about basketball. It's about family, friends and loyalty and is also extremely well-written.
You do not have to be a St. John's fan to enjoy this book. It gives you great insights on a guy that didn't have all the tools to be a starter in major college ball, but he never quit and developed into a great little coach.
This is one of the most authentic books I have read by someone about the relationship between a father and son. Bill beautifully describes the amazing influence his father has upon his life and his journey into collegiate basketball and a championship high school coaching career. This is a Never Give Up story and much more. It is a testament to how acting with integrity and care for others will provide a level of success is unmatchable in so many ways.
