From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-To mix a biography of Bourgeois with an explanation of her sculpture, fit in her impact on the artistic community, and remain accessible to students may seem to be an impossible feat, but Greenberg and Jordan have done it. Through solid research and interviews with Bourgeois, the woman's stories and work come to life with poignant clarity. Her childhood years and her relationship with her parents are examined and their effect on her work is clear in the abundant black-and-white and full-color photographs. Bourgeois's place in the art world was sealed in 1969 when she became the first woman sculptor to have a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. An explanation of how to view sculpture using Bourgeois's Couple (2001) as an example, an area list of locations where her art is displayed, and lists of the works pictured-one chronological and one by chapter-are included. This superb book is a perfect starting point for research on the artist and 20th-century sculpture.Delia Fritz, Mercersburg Academy, PACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Gr. 8-12. As in Frank O. Gehry, Outside In (2000), the authors once again make challenging art accessible and exciting to teen readers. This time they focus on Louise Bourgeois, one of the best-known living sculptors, whose work deals with primal themes of jealousy, betrayal, and shifting sexual identities, which, according to Bourgeois are inspired by her painful childhood and her adulterous father. In clear, elegant prose, bolstered with numerous quotes from the artist, the authors seamlessly juxtapose stories of Bourgeois' life with relevant artworks, which are often explained in the artist's own words. Beautifully reproduced photographs, printed on well-designed pages, offer an excellent mix of the artist's personal life and her art, though the authors remind readers that "we don't have to know her story to have our own strong reaction," to her work. By showing the relationship among shapes, colors, materials, and emotions, the authors invite readers to approach even the most bewildering art with confidence and think about it in their own words. The book concludes with a glossary, a bibliography, and notes. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

First I saw her arts at Glenstone. I love her works. Every her book is expensive even if they are secondhand. This is the simplest version about knowing her. Thank you. She is a complicated artist psychologically, but her keen eye finds what we miss in usual life and sometimes her expressions are so comical.

I loved all the pictures the book had of Louise Bourgeois art work. Easily understandable for younger kids but entertaining for adults as well. Buy it, you will love it.

As you read RUNAWAY GIRL, a beautifully-crafted book that illuminates Louise Bourgeois's story, it is impossible not to keep your eyes on the art. The book is absolutely saturated with vivid photographs of the ninety-two year-old artist's work, as well as a progression of photos of Louise throughout a life that spanned nearly the entire twentieth century and has continued on into the new millennium. Louise's story--from a childhood in France to an apartment in Manhattan--encompasses family, creativity, and personal evolution, as well as her historic role in breaking down sexual barriers in the art world. But what makes RUNAWAY GIRL such an important piece of nonfiction for young adults is that unique peek at the psychological roots of an artist's creativity. Greenberg & Jordan provide the perfect measure of Louise's early years in order for us to understand those roots without ever getting bogged down in extraneous detail. The extensive access to her inner life that this controversial artist has granted the authors and their readers makes the book inspiring and unique. I didn't expect to enjoy a book about some female artist I'd never heard of before, but to find out why some two-story-high spiders represent her mother and herself totally captivated me."From one of Louise Bourgeois's journals:The Runaway Girl who never grew up.I need no support nor comfort.I need no safety net, no breakfast. No lunch or tea, no visitors, no telephone calls nor little messages. No little concerts, no hype, or encouragement for big projects. No ambitions, no spying on my neighbors.I need nothing...I can wait, I am not afraid, I am an adult.Nothing is lacking."It is also fascinating to see little snippets of the artist at work. For instance, the authors describe her creation of one of my favorite pieces of her art:"She would go back to [the marble quarries in] Pietranta many times in the sixties and again in the eighties. Jerry Gorovoy, who accompanied her on one such trip, says there wasn't much time for sightseeing. They arrived at their hotel in the evening and instead of going to a restaurant or walking around town, she insisted on getting right to work. Jerry says that Louise had a hard time relaxing. 'If you take her to the beach, she can sit still for about five minutes. Then she gets restless.' Unfortunately, Louise hadn't packed any art supplies--no clay, wax or Plasticine. So she asked Jerry for the shirt off his back. She folded and shaped it, stitching the cotton into position until she was satisfied with the form. The next day at the quarry she changed the design somewhat, then applied gesso, a liquid plaster, to harden the fabric. A larger, marble version was measured and roughed out by the craftsmen at the quarry according to her specifications. Then it was shipped to the studio [in Brooklyn], where, upon her return, she carefully reworked it with a chisel. Eventually Jerry's shirt evolved into Femme Maison, 1983, a fresh interpretation of her familiar subject."RUNAWAY GIRL concludes with a variety of useful resources, including "How to Look at a Sculpture," and "Where to View Artwork by Louise Bourgeois," as well as an expansive glossary, a bibliography, and a chronological listing of her work." What happens next? That is her main focus. And so she stays at home on Twentieth Street, spinning her memories, fantasies, and ideas into art. Free with her thoughts and feelings, up to a point, she lets us know that there are other secrets, other ideas and thoughts to consider about her, about her work. 'I'm a long distance runner. I'm a lonely runner and that's the way I like it.' "It was a delight to "meet" Louise. Long may she run.

1500 years is a lot of history to try to pack into one 500-page volume. Justo Gonzales does a very admirable job in this task. Although I’m a lover of history, the further back in time one goes, the more the enjoyment tends to slightly whither. In many cases, there simply isn’t as much reference material, and many important figures and events are left to some speculation. This book probably could have been ten times as large as it is, but the author knows when enough is enough. He traces the history of Christianity as far back as the Resurrection. He then focuses on the key figures – good and bad – that helped Christianity grow and flourish. It shouldn’t surprise us that, just like today, there was never complete agreement on how to interpret scripture, nor how one should live their life to obtain a status as “godly”. We read about scholarly debates in meticulous detail. How could Jesus be totally man and totally God? If he was, what did this exactly mean, and how were we to treat such a figure? Where did the term “monk” come from? Why were so many so joyous to choose to live their lives in isolation and poverty? This book isn’t strictly linear. It simply can’t be. The author does a good job keeping his reader interested in the fascinating people and times. I confess, though, that not as many of the key people stuck with me after I completed this book. There were simply too many bishops, popes, and other key figures to keep track. A careful use of a notebook could have easily remedied this issue, though, and even though the people in the book were numerous, the author does a wonderful job of communicating the major events and feelings at the time.We learn of schisms between East (Greek) and West (Roman) over scripture interpretation. We also see how many used the church for nothing more than a selfish power grab. Without going into detail, I was left feeling strongly that separation of church and state is a wonderful concept, and one that we should never abandon. We see the church becoming more and more corrupt, and although the book stops before the official Protestant Reformation (which was mainly due to the ongoing corruption), we can see the beginnings of such a movement. Since the book isn’t linear, we do read about events that happened several centuries after the Reformation – specifically the missionaries to Central and South America as late as the 1800s. My guess is that these events helped extend the original narrative and weren’t affected nor relevant to the Reformation – so it probably makes more sense to include them in this volume.I’m eagerly awaiting reading the second, and final volume. Based on the author’s style and attitude (he has no problem pointing out mistakes of his faith throughout the years, and he’s no apologist), I’m fairly confident I’ll enjoy volume 2. I’m hoping that one will sink in more since, being from a later time period, they’ll be more familiar faces, figures, and facts that will allow my brain to latch onto and retain better.

This is a very brief but excellent overview of church history from the apostolic era to the end of the Middle Ages. The writer is unabashedly Protestant and this comes through in the book, but he presents the material without denigrating the Catholic or Orthodox churches.Anyone attempting to cover 1,500 years of history in 500 pages will have to select and sift his material very carefully. This is primarily a Euro-centric account of the Western church, with little attention given to the history of the Eastern Orthodox church or other offshoots of Christianity less familiar to Westerners, such as the Coptic and so-called Nestorian churches. This does not, however, detract from its value as an immensely useful and lucid introduction to church history. Gonzalez is an excellent and informative writer, and once you start reading, it will be difficult to put this book down.I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading Volume 2 when it arrives!

This book is not a theological treatise, but a history, told in story form, of Christianity. And while I do not identify with the Christian church, I am a very old student of life and the world and there can be little argument that Christianity has, since its beginning, been one of the most powerful institutional influences on the world. Understand how it evolved and you might have a better understanding how we, as a global humanity, got to where we are today.Mission accomplished. Justo Gonzalez’ incredibly well researched narrative, told in a matter of fact, neutral voice (or as close to neutral as one can get given the subject), was entertaining to read and enlightening to process. (And I will be processing it for a long time to come.)If you are interested in the theological side of the story I believe you would find it equally informative, although it will take an open mind. Gonzalez covers all sides of the story, warts and all.I daresay that the history of Christianity is one of the least studied histories outside of a narrow segment of the theological community. (Gonzalez is a retired professor of historical theology.) Non-Christians, perhaps, see it as strictly a theological story while Christians, perhaps, are inclined to see the study of theologies outside of that which they have been taught as somehow irrelevant or, at least, compromising.Having read the book, however, I am inclined to believe this is a book we should all read, regardless of religious identity. For starters, it’s fascinating. I am, above all else, a philosopher and found myself marveling at the philosophical implications of the story at every turn. (And there were more turns than you can imagine.) What were they thinking and how did they get to the point of such extreme conviction that they would lead impoverished, lonely lives in the desert? The writing is very good and the author clearly knows his subject. The names of people and places are not familiar to most of us. The timeline (i.e., 1500 years) is expansive for a 500-page book. And it is organized into topical chapters (e.g. The New Order, Eastern Christianity, Movements of Renewal), so the book does not follow a strict timeline. The resulting back and forth introduces, and then reintroduces, several characters. Taken together, these attributes are not conducive to a “quick read” although it is not laborious in the sense that many scholarly texts can be. Nonetheless, I found it helpful to keep an electronic tablet nearby for quick access to Google when I sensed I had lost the thread. (What was Neoplatonic mysticism again?)One of the things that struck me the most about the story is that the theological debates that occurred within the early church can seem a bit tortured by today’s “popular” theological standards. How does one reconcile the trinity? How can Jesus be both divine and human at the same time? How did he get that way? And how can we answer those questions without sacrificing the incarnation, the resurrection, and his saving of humankind? They aren’t the types of questions most Christians wrestle with today, but they are at the heart of what all Christian denominations now believe and teach.A related observation was the degree to which reason and philosophy was an integral part of the story of Christianity and popularly entertained and debated. Formal reason, of course, has been largely eliminated from public discourse today, and I have to wonder if that has not contributed to both the secularization of Western culture and the increasingly polarized and emotional nature of our politics and public discourse. As is always the case, the history of Christianity is not a one-dimensional story. It is a multi-faceted story that involves political power, vast amounts of wealth, more than a little corruption and scandal, lethal oppression, and, of course, faith and theology. And it is almost impossible to sort out what facet had what influence. Those influences, moreover, ebbed and flowed in importance over time. The Buddhists refer to “dependent origination”, the idea that nothing exists in isolation. We can understand many aspects of reality but can never know it completely, meaning that all reality must be interpreted in context. That is no less true of Christianity than anything else. That context, however, is fluid, more akin to energy than matter. That is both the reason we cannot always learn from history and the reason we must study history to fully understand where we are today. This book, in the end, is a book about context. And whether you are interested in Christianity or just understanding the world around you, the context it explores is important. It’s also a fascinating story. What else can a reader ask for?

A lot of information that helped with my understanding of how we have come to where we are with our faith. Sometimes the jumping around in time caused me some confusion but I don't know how else the author could give an overview of the culture as well as the events occurring that impacted Christianity. I had to keep my dictionary by my side (or available online) since some unfamiliar (not in day to day vernacular) words cropped up consistently.

An excellent source for student research." ―School Library Journal (Journal)"This short, accessible book provides information on the growing water crisis. Looking at the subject globally, the discussion includes matters such as the dwindling supply of fresh water, its pollution by agriculture and industry, the dramatic effects of climate change, and the increasing competition for water. Kallen writes clearly and bolsters his arguments with specifics, such as the diminishing Ogallala aquifer, which lies beneath eight arid American states and supplies drinking water as well as nearly a third of the nation's irrigation water. Approximately 240 feet deep in the 1950s, it averages about 80 feet deep today. While the color photos are often rather small, they are well chosen and clearly reproduced. At intervals throughout the book, excellent sidebars and full-page features spotlight pertinent topics such as the desalination of sea water, the destructive effects of ethanol production on aquifers and river systems, and the 2014 chemical spill that contaminated drinking water in Charleston, West Virginia. This timely, informative resource offers young people facts and perspective on this vital topic." ―Booklist (Journal)

When I read that Hostess was going out of business, I thought about the snacks that I had enjoyed as a kid. Atop the list was Hostess Orange Cupcakes and though I hadn't tasted one in years, I nevertheless lamented the 'death' of an old favorite. I bought this book based on reviews and I was shocked when I saw the the recipe for my old standby, Hostess Orange Cupcakes! I did a quick inventory of ingredients on hand and went to the grocery store to pick up the missing items. OMG..these are better than the originals! They have a more pronounced orange flavor, are more moist and don't have that boxed mix taste. Subsequently, I tried the Twinkies recipe and it too, was an upgrade over the original. I had a recipe from one of the Top Secret Recipes books that used a boxed white cake as the basis for the cakes; this one tastes homemade and that makes a big difference in the quality. On the basis of just these two recipes, I highly recommend this book. Now, as for those Cheez-Its......

yup these are delicious recipes Yum

If you like to bake and like 'the' favorites, you're gonna love this recipe book. Takes me right back to my childhood.

As advertised, and fast shipping.

Great cookbook the hostess cupcake recipe in this book is far better than the one in the Hotess Mini cupcake Maker[[ASIN:1612431216 Classic Snacks Made from Scratch: 70 Homemade Versions of Your Favorite Brand-Name Treats]

I LOVE this book! The photos are fun, the paper is high quality and my kids love exploring it too. So far, I've made the pop tarts (incredible!) and the pizza rolls, which took a lot less time than I anticipated.

Having a lot of fun with this at work!

Amazing book! Really nice recipes. The shipping is good and arrived quickly.

Robert's book is a breath of fresh air and has literally blown away all remaining ideas and beliefs I held about what's true, about what it means to be 'awake'. A readiness to be my own authority, fully, versus following others or hanging onto others' ideas and concepts arose while reading the 2nd chapter. Wow! A readiness to live in a 'not knowing' state. A readiness to be a 'clean slate' in every moment and see for myself 'what is'. This brought about a palpable sense of freedom. Robert's writing is unique on this topic for instead of making himself the authority, as most, he prompts us to be our own authority. Thank you, Robert! ~Lonni Oliver Pounsford

This book has no promises of any kind. No enlightenment after you read it. No improvement or hope for a better future. Nothing whatsoever. But if you read it with an open mind and heart, its message might kick you free in an instant, more than you have ever been able to imagine. Even without the need to get awake or enlightened. Just seeing life as it really is, here and now, no fairytales. Just the plain and sometimes hard truth of being human. Being human without any conditions. This book has changed my life and the outlook on everything. Even the most horrific life circumstances one can come across, understanding the message will shine a light in the darkest regions of Life. Worry, fear and anxiety could just dissolve in this very moment. This review i wrote after reading The Then Thousand things for the first time, while it was accurate just at that moment many things happened in meanwhile. Being on the path for more than 20 years, visiting India and it's Guru's, Indian and Western, having spent time with some very famous guys selling Enlightenment, i was still suffering and very disturbed.Reading Robert's book was an eye-opening, my life drastically changed, still looking for a way out of suffering i returned to some of my older teachers and teachings just to see more clearly how as Robert would call it ' self-deluded' they really are. I found a new teacher with a big heart and did some seminars with him, although what he provides can give some heart opening experiences and although being in his presence there was no doubt that he is as how he called it 'being one with essential nature' still something didn't smell good, Spiritual trademarks never attracted me so much but for the promise of getting one with my essential nature i was willing to pay the price. I confronted the teacher with the fact that he charges 275 dollars for an online session but i was told since he is an expert the price is still very low. Right.I kept on reading Robert, listened to all the zoom meetings and slowly everything fell away.Advaita vedanta friends would still sent me the newest hot satsang teacher's videos, the next fix or cure or next modality or technique to become whatever the promise might be. Everything stopped resonating, just can't watch or listen to any of it without feeling nauseous. The whole spiritual search fell gradually away and in the place came me, just me, plain me, with whatever arises or presents itself, and pain and suffering is still part of it, at times, and the only movement that remains is a dance, a shake it out of my system, a cry or a laugh, a hug.I became more and more human, no more escapes in a fantasized 'free' future. No more dependency on teachers and teachings.Just this, here, now, looking at it all as it arises with the only question that remains, where is this all arising from. And having no answer. And knowing this all will end. As everyone else 'me' will die. And that is perfectly ok, nothing is in my hands, i cannot change anything that happens. But i can make the best of it. Of it. Whatever that is.Deep gratitude to Robert, your words have helped me to set me free of so much rubbish, and to find myself again, just as i am. Included everything. Here now everything is perfectly ok.My Kindle e-reader broke last week and just found out there is a new version of 3T in pocket format, i already ordered it. 3T is the last book i will ever need or read on these topics.A deep bow to you Robert and Merry Christmas

Here are Saltzman's main ideas :I am the center of awareness.I and what I'm aware of are one inseparable happening.Thoughts, feelings, and actions arise on their own. You are not causing anything to happen. You are not the doer.No one ever chooses what to do next any more than one can choose what to think next, or what to feel next: anxious, relaxed, worried, in love, etc. All of that just arises--including what you find yourself "doing" and "choosing."Awareness is whatever is noticed here and now.Awareness and the contents of awareness are one inseparable happening. The container and its contents are one inseparable happening.Wholeness and its parts are one inseparable happening. The seer and the seen are one inseparable happening.I and whatever I experience in each moment are an inseparable wholeness. So the feeling of separateness and isolation disappears.Without awareness there are no objects, but without objects there is no awareness. It is not that objects arise in or upon awareness, but that objects are awareness, and awareness is objects. The container and the contained are one and the same, and reliance on the traditional notion of a permanent self or “presence” existing apart from and prior to phenomena is part of what one awakens from.Try this experiment. Get a bowl of some food you like and sit in a comfortable chair. Close your eyes, and as you are eating say to yourself, "Eating is happening."There is not a separate you located somewhere behind the eyes and between the ears who is HAVING this experience. In each moment you ARE this experience, you ARE this happening. You are the choiceless awareness in which doer, doing, and done are one and the same.Often, confusion arises due to the limitations of language--the subject/verb/object structure that implies a doer, what the doer does, and to whom or about whom the doer does it. So, for example, in the ordinary sentence form, ”I see Spot run,” we have “I” over here (subject) doing seeing (verb) of “Spot” over there (object).I am simply pointing out that although language divides this “seeing-happening” into three pieces, that happening is really only one indivisible process we call “myself,” or, that I like to call “this aliveness."The feeling of being “Robert” is this aliveness, the ability to see is this aliveness, and the image of Spot in the mind is this aliveness. It’s ALL this aliveness.Or, seen from another angle, one might say that what is seen cannot be separated from seeing, nor can the seer be separated from seeing. So seer, seeing, and seen are all of a piece, a single happening. From either angle, it should be clear that awareness and its supposed “contents” are not separable. Without awareness, there are no contents, and without contents there is no awareness. Some people try to say that a completely empty awareness exists already just waiting to be filled with contents. This is sometimes called “pure consciousness.” I don’t buy it. Show it to me and I might believe you.Focus on what you really know.We humans are built to ask the ultimate questions like "What is God", "What is the meaning of life", "Why are we here", "Is there life after death" etc.But we are not built to really figure out the answers to those questions. It's all a mystery. So all of that is pretty much a waste of time. All we really know is what we are experiencing here and now. This is it.The idea of impermanence freaks us out.We don't like the idea that someday this body will be dead.So we latch onto religious or spiritual ideas that tell us that even though the body will die, the soul or Big Self will somehow live on.When we look at the animal kingdom it seems perfectly normal that an animal is born, matures, and then dies. But we have trouble acknowledging that when it comes to us.For many people, not knowing feels so anxiety-ridden, and the desire for "life" to have a definite meaning and definite destination feels so pressing, that they glom on as soon as possible to an explanation that allows them to "know" that life has a telos, and hopefully rules and methods too. When your guru tells you that someday you will be enlightened if you do such and such a practice, that is taking you away from here and now, taking you in the wrong direction. It gives you the impression that the daily reality that you have is somehow not good enough, that someday you will experience a much better reality than the one that is here right now. But guess what? This is it.Just as people use alcohol and drugs to deal with the pain and fear of being a human animal in an insecure world, people use ideas as drugs. Knowing what those ideas are without judging them will allow them to fall away naturally in their time. When the fever to attain something permanent comes to an end, and one finds oneself instead flowing along with everything else in the universe, one is awake. Each moment arrives freshly in its uniqueness.Freedom is being exactly what you are with no idea of improvement. There is no searching for meaning, looking for answers, or demanding that anything be different from the way it is.One can just be and let the stream of consciousness flow where it will.Whatever you feel, think, and see IS you. The boundary between self and others dissolves. The personal self has nowhere very solid to perch.Beliefs and opinions lose significance. No one is to blame for “bad choices.”Frustration, pain, loss, fear, and all the rest of the “negatives” are simply part of living as a human primate animal. Those feelings just arise if and when they do, just like the “positives” such as pleasure, joy, peace of mind, creativity, love, etcetera. Trying to have one without the other is, I say, a fool’s errand. When I open my eyes in the morning, I find a world of objects, feelings, and thoughts, complete and intact. I do not have to TRY to create that world, any more than I have to try to circulate my blood or grow my hair. The world just happens, and I could not prevent that happening even if I wanted to.I find myself simply amazed by each moment of this aliveness. To experience this aliveness directly blows so-called “non-duality” right out of the water.Buddha said: "Within your own mind, you already have what you need to succeed: the ability to put others ahead of yourself. This is called the wish-fulfilling gem."This experience flows automatically. The sense of I that seems to be at its center is just a thought.

This is one of those books that will stay nearby for years. Right now it sits next to where I sit to drink my coffee and watch the sunrise each morning. A few pages of The Ten Thousand Things has become a daily part of this most precious ritual. Robert Saltzman's book is the fruit of his lifetime of intelligent inquiry and received grace. And I feel this as I read. That I am in the hands of someone who is uncompromising in seeing and saying the crisp, hard, transforming truth of reality as it's been revealed to him.I urge you, if it is possible, to get the hard copy rather than the kindle edition. You will understand why when you hold it in your hands and feel the pages and take in Robert's beautiful photographs. However, if not possible, the Kindle edition can also be a boon.

"Fascinating....[Perrusquia] tells part of the story that only he can—the discovery of Withers’s secret and the struggle to bring it to light—and his contact with Lawrence’s surviving family members makes for insights into the FBI agent’s own personality and motivations."—Clifford Thompson, Wall Street Journal "A smart journalist’s book, crisply marching through Withers’s F.B.I. records and the paper’s battle to pry them out of the government’s grip."—Christopher Bonanos, New York Times Book Review “A Spy in Canaan is a reporter’s account filled with dramatic scenes, sharply etched characters and insights into FBI political surveillance, the civil rights movement and the journalistic process. . . . As A Spy in Canaan adeptly shows, history is not always so clear-cut."—Seth Rosenfeld, San Francisco Chronicle  "A triumph of investigative reporting, the product of the author’s dogged research. . . . A Spy in Canaan brims with new details about the inner workings of the movement in Memphis and beyond."—Aram Goudsouzian, The Washington Post"A meticulously documented, finely written account of Withers’ life. . . . Even more important, it is a damning portrait of FBI tactics in an era marked by intense social upheaval."—Pamela Miller, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune“As everyone from Memphis knows, Marc Perrusquia is an indefatigable sleuth who has done much to tease out the most important stories from our city’s intriguing and tragic past. In this ground-breaking and at times shocking examination into the conflicted life of a towering civil rights-era figure, we are reminded that the truth is often far more complicated than we could ever imagine.” —Hampton Sides, author of Hellhound on His Trail"Marc Perrusquia's pioneering investigative reporting exposed how a renowned black photojournalist was actually a longtime paid informant for J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. Powerfully and perceptively, this remarkable true-life detective story shows how many lives can be damaged by secret intelligence operatives run amok."—David J. Garrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Bearing the Cross and Rising Star“A Spy in Canaan is an important contribution to the history of the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and the role of the FBI in monitoring and attempting to contain activists challenging the racial status quo in the Memphis area. Perrusquia’s sobering tale provides a context for understanding the contemporary debate over race and social justice.”—Athan Theoharis, author of Spying on Americans: Political Surveillance from Hoover to the Huston Plan

This is a thoroughly researched and footnoted description of another previously untold story of the civil rights movement. In the interest of full disclosure I did have a phone conversation with the author, and later sent him some additional materials before publication. He misspelled my name (page 191), but that error does not diminish the accuracy and significance of the book. Lots of familiar names (John and Viola McFerren, Baxton Bryant, Mike Cody, Lucius Burch, Anne Braden, Don Pigford, Jim Lawson) to name a few. The number of books written about the 1960s continues to grow and grow, which is a good thing. It was always more a matter of separate local struggles taking place than a carefully orchestrated movement with clear leadership at the top. The FBI's fixation with communists adversely affected the lives of a lot of well meaning idealistic (naive?) people and Ernest Withers played a large part in that. His time as the "photographer for the civil rights movement' is book-ended with his corrupt behavior as a police officer and a prison sentence for the clemency for cash scandal. He may have been a good photographer, but I have difficulty thinking of him as anything more than an ambitious person who enjoyed quasi-celebrity status. Lots of people unfortunately do that and rationalize their illegal actions.

In the fall of 1997, Marc Perrusquia spoke with a retired FBI agent who revealed an explosive secret.Ernest Withers, renowned Civil Rights photographer… a man who walked side-by-side with Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson, Billy Kyles and others… was an FBI informant. The retired FBI agent, however, provided few clues and no hard evidence. Lacking that hard evidence, Perrusquia momentarily abandoned his pursuit of the story. Thirteen years later, an obscure reference in an FBI report obtained through a FOIA request gave the twenty-nine year career investigative reporter the critical break he needed to reveal the depth of the Withers-FBI connection.Perrusquia is a thirty-year investigative reporter who steadfastly believes facts, not speculation, should be the basis of journalism. Not once throughout A Spy In Canaan does he manufacture connections without supporting proof. The prose is tight, the pace is right and the revelations are shocking and chilling. Many are familiar with the larger narrative of J. Edgar Hoover’s COINTELPRO operations. But, many do not know the granular level of these operations. Many also do not know is the level of local enforcement cooperation with the FBI. And... many do not know these operations continued AFTER Hoover’s death.A Spy In Canaan is a seminal contribution to the history of Memphis, the Civil Rights Era and a government run amok and trampling on the Bill of Rights. Perrusquia should receive a Pulitzer for A Spy In Canaan.Buy… this… book.

Good book, solid facts from a straight shooter. He doesn't come to my friend John McFerren's defense any, but as an author who approached McFerren strictly from the Withers/FBI point of view, he's nails the general theme of the files, which I have personally seen. Looking forward to Preston Lauterbach's version as well, Bluff City.

I am so glad I read this book! It brought to light several things I had forgotten about the Civil Rights Movement and introduced many things I never knew. It's a very interesting book and the photos are priceless!

Excellent read! This book gives an inside view of the civil rights movement in Memphis and the giants of the movement. The book examines the action of the FBI and the abuses that take place in the name of national security. The fight by the author and his paper to get the FBI to release information under the freedom of information act is an important piece and something we should all be concerned at the effort it took to get this information and even then the FBI did not completely comply.

Remarkable story of the highest degree of importance.

What an amazing story about the power and use of photography during the 60's/70's civil rights days in Memphis and the Mid-South! Well researched!
