I’m so disappointed in this book. There are only about 60 pages of color in this 368 page book! The recipes don’t look appealing because the pictures are in black, gray and white. It looks like you are reading a newspaper. Don’t order it. Spend your money on a book that offers recipes with pictures of what your food should look like.

I have many years of Southern living cookbooks. Boy they were certainly trying to save money this year. I first opened the cookbook & saw the beautiful color pictures as they normally have. After going thru those I came upon cheap paper print with black & white photos of the recipe dish. What a disappointment !!! I know in a few years the cheap paper they used with start to yellow. There older cookbooks all gave glossy paper. Just a disappointment so I am returning the cookbook. Guess I will be getting another annual cookbook from another magazine who is still doing quality printed cookbook

Well I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing. The cover was printed upside down and the back cover was the front of the book. Thank goodness it had a paper jacket. The quality of the paper is very cheap. Mostly black and white photos. Sections of color photos. But to me they looked dated. Not recent photographs. Just very poor quality overall. FirstCooking Light went under, then Coastal living, I wouldn’t be surprised if Southern Living fails as well.

This has always been my favorite cookbook and I look forward to it each year, I have been collecting the Southern Living Annual Recipe cookbook since 1988. But the graphics and paper quality is very cheap. Black and white photos are not what I paid for or expected. This may be my last purchase of this cookbook. Taste of Home Annual Cookbook may become my new favorite.

I bought this as a Christmas gift and was really disappointed since it was a hardback. All of the pages on the inside were like paper pages you would see in a paperback and they were all in black and white with hardly any pics!! I would not recommend or buy again.

Tonight is the first time I have looked @ my Southern Living 2018 cookbook. Upon opening the book, I discovered it is upside down.

I've added yet another SL annual cookbook to my collection (since 1979). Though recipes can be found on line, it's great to have my own copy of this particular cookbook. I often try recipes from this collection.

Love collecting the Annual Southern Living Recipes cookbook. Always enjoy looking through for new recipes and tips. I would like more color photos but understand that would increase the cost!

The book is super small, about 100 pages and smaller than my hand. Would not have paid $12 if seen in person, maybe $5. Haven't read it yet, will update when I do

While Iceland has become more known to the rest of the world in the past decade, there is still much to be desired in the realm of folktales, language resources, and culture related materials. Thankfully, Alda is helping to turn this around. These folktales were completely new to me, and as enjoyable a read as any Grimm tale. I look forward to reading them in their original Icelandic. Next on my list: "The Little Book Of The Icelanders"!

beautiful stories ~ lovely prep for a trip to iceland

Short, sweet and packed with good stories. If you've read about Iceland, traveled to Iceland, or know anyone from Iceland, the legends in this book are totally unique.Best of all, the author gives a brief analysis of the stories explains the historical and cultural context. Totally unlike Grimm's fairytales and those of the European continent, Iceland's literature is a gem.I'm looking forward to reading more of Alda's books.

As an Icelander I enjoyed the way this book was presented and written. Non Icelanders will find this book to be entertaining as well as an insight into the culture.

I've had a fascination with Iceland (as it seems a lot of non-Icelanders do) since taking a short trip there a number of years ago. I follow a few blogs by Icelanders, including Alda Sigmundsdóttir's The Iceland Weather Report, which is how I heard about her Icelandic Folk Legends translation. Anyone who has read Grimm's Fairy Tales knows these kinds of stories aren't just for children, and I really enjoyed the Icelandic twist on this classic form. In her wonderful introduction, Sigmundsdóttir sets up the innate mysteriousness of Iceland's environment and the historical context during which these stories were first repeated to help pass the harsh dark winters. And then there's the stories themselves, which are -- as I'd hoped -- pleasingly unusual. As Sigmundsdóttir explains in the introduction, the broad outlines of some of the stories are familiar. For instance, you might recognize Rumpelstiltskin, warped and refracted through Icelandic eyes though he is. But then there are uniquely Icelandic elements, like tales of the hidden people and a positive stepmother character. And you've probably never read anything quite like "Thorgeir's Bull."

Our 4 year old Star Wars fan loves this book. It's full of characters and vehicles with info and details about them. The pictures are large and info is basic, which is great for younger fans.

The amazing world of Star Wars is a excellent book packed with big bold pictures of the heroes and villains of the saga. Not to mention all the spaceships and vehicles and droids as well. Highly recommended

My son lives this book. Good for fans of the original trilogy, and the newer!

if you are a hard-core star wars fan, do not buy this book! LOL, I am not a true Star Wars fan. I do not know the backstorys, the lore, or any of the important little details. So I innocently bought this book for our 3 1/2 year-old son. As my husband was reading it to him, he freaked out! Don't get me wrong, the pictures are amazing, and the fold out aspect is AWSOME. It is a great LOOKING book. but apparently about 85% of it's facts are inaccurate/misleading! One or two would be excusable. But to have 85% of its content WRONG, one would almost think the editors did it on purpose! lol. (some examples; Mace windu was not a calm Jedi as the book states, but rather a Jedi who is passionate enough to almost have gone over to the Darkside. The book claims light sabers are powered by colored crystals, which bothered my husband because "Kaiser crystals" are the precise name, and they are clear. I thought this was nitpicking a little, until some of the specific guns are named. my husband said; "Boba Fett DOES have an EE-3 blaster rifle, but THAT is not a blaster rifle!") again, this is a beautiful book. The life-size poster of BB-8 is as cool as it sounds! and if you don't mind some information being very slightly off, then I recommend this book. But if you are a true Star Wars fan, and and if it is important to you to have every little detail be COMPLETELY accurate, then do not get this book. You will only be frustrated! I still give this book three stars. As I said, the pictures are pretty cool, and my son loves to flip through and just look at them. :-)

I rarely have time to write a review, but I made the time for this gem. Except for Sherry Soule's book, this is the only other one that I found to rate a five stars. There were something that I still didn't get even when others kept telling me I needed to show more. This book has an extensive segment that shows you what words are consider telling and then gives you examples. The author goes a step further by even explaining why some telling words would be better. For example, she used the word pray and explains that it's sometimes better to write the word than to show it. I will use this book many times over in my editing, and if I could give the author a six star I would. I only wish she had it in audio.

When I got the book, I was concerned that it would be another collection of nebulous advice unconnected to the kind of writing I did. I couldn't have been more wrong. Hardy walks through example after example of how a passage being "told" can be converted into a more active, interesting, and energetic "show." Hooray for concrete examples! She uses keywords or trigger words to spot problematic text, and makes the very sensible suggestion that it is fine to have these "tell" snippets in early drafts, but you should scan for these keywords when you make another pass through your manuscript and convert these "tells" to "shows" -- and she has many, many examples of doing just that.When I finished the book, I had a burning desire to walk back through my manuscripts to apply what I had learned. Her tag line "And Really Getting It" might even be an understatement. Her next book in the Skill Builders Series is "Understanding Conflict: (And What It Really Means)." I pushed the "buy" button for that book within moments of finishing this one. You will, too. Highly recommended.

After years of giving up half - way through, years of stopping, years of not understanding what was wrong with his lifeless prose, the penny had dropped - the best penny he'd ever spent - that much he knew.

This book is a must read for every fiction writer. Through my bachelors and then my MFA, people often pointed out to each other when to “show” and not “Tell” in our works and we all thought we understood as much as we needed to about that seemingly simple concept. This book proves we didn’t know even the half of it! I now exactly have to revise my novels and how to write much better first drafts. This is a well-written book that explains the difference between showing and telling, discusses when telling is a good idea, describes how point of view affects whether something is told or shown, and then breaks down, in exhaustive detail, the kinds of telling, the words that stand out as red flags for telling, and how to fix the prose so that it shows. Tons of clear examples make the book even more useful.This is 201-level stuff; it's more useful for someone who's already read the basic craft books than for someone just beginning to write. I recommend it for anyone who's tired of receiving "show, don't tell" critiques.

This book did an AMAZING job of helping me finally understand this concept. All of my previous teachers just taught it as "Use action words! No passive voice!" without really explaining HOW to properly do that. This book not only broke down the actual difference in words and tone, it provided so many examples of how to fix told prose, how show/tell varies based on POV, and when it's actually OK to use telling. And it did all that in such a clear way, it was almost impossible not to understand the why and how of it. I will definitely be recommending this book to all of my writing friends (especially with NaNoWriMo just around the corner), I think it's definitely one of the most useful writing books I've ever read.

I've read a lot of writing books. They almost always mention "show don't tell," but sometimes don't really go into details beyond the obvious. This book includes some of the best instruction I've read about this topic, going into detail about how to show effectively, how to spot when you are telling, as well as when to show and when NOT to. The book includes lots of actual examples, using different points of view as well, which is incredibly helpful. Ms. Hardy is a really great teacher-- I'm so glad I read this one! I will need to reread it several times, I think, to get the full value of her instruction.

I had specific problems in mind while trying to punch up a novel I'm currently writing. This book not only helped me solve those problems but pointed out mistakes and poor writing that I didn't even realize exist.While other books may occasionally offer some advice that helps, nearly every page of this book contains something you feel like underlining for future reference. *(but don't because you'll end up underlining practically the whole book)Best of all is that she offers fantastic, concrete EXAMPLES regarding every bit of advice. This is what other books lack. They criticize a style or some slopping writing technique, but don't even bother to give you an example, or one that truly helps.If they had a 10-star rating, I'd give it 10. Absolutely amazing book.

I used this book to make the best Thanksgiving dinner since my mom died over 25 years ago. The dressing brought back memories of my mom and was absolutely delicious. While my Mac and Cheese is pretty good, the recipe in this book took it to another level. As an appetizer, I made the fried wings and sauce, again very easy to follow recipes that taste wonderful. My next attempt will be the potato salad and the greens for Christmas...I can't wait.

Love, love, LOVE this cook book! The yummy recipes remind me of the food my mother, grandmother and neighbor ladies made when I was growing up. The instructions are user-friendly and the vibrant photos just jump off the page. Miss Robbie's back-stories nestled among many of the recipes give you the feel of being taught a cooking lesson from a sassy auntie.My 87-year-old mom (a stroke patient) is a big fan of the TV show, "Welcome to Sweetie Pies" I made the mistake of showing the book to Mom when I served her breakfast. She loves it so much she couldn't put it down to eat!

I was so excited and so happy for her these recipes remind me of my grandmother and my mother there's only a few difference in some her recipes and some new ones I never heard of my grandson got excited about the Kool Aid pie so we made that and we enjoyed it it was delicious congratulations miss Robbie may God bless you.

Finally it is here. Thanks Miss Robbie. I have been waiting for this cookbook. The recipes remind me of my dear Mom's recipes. Some are exactly the same. Easy to follow directions with basic ingredients. Reminds me of home and all the great memories. Soul food at its best. Can't wait to start cooking!

So far I tried the greens, potato salad, hot honey chicken wings, & succotash. Everything is very good and pretty simple to make. I am not a very good cook and I found that a couple of the recipes do not complete the instructions. For example, the chicken wings calls for lemon juice and soy sauce in the instructions, but do not list those two ingredients in the Ingredients list, therefore I had to guess at how much to use and I probably got it wrong. Another example: the succotash recipe indicates to cook the bacon and remove from the pan, but then the instructions stop. However, by looking at the picture I figured out what to do with the bacon. I wish all the recipes could have had a pic, but I know that was not possible. The pics that are in the book are outstanding. I had already made the mac & cheese several times by getting the recipe online. Making Sweetie Pie’s mac & cheese is the only way I can make a decent mac & cheese. I can’t wait to try more of the recipes.

I love this book! I really love the idea of making your own spices to add to your dishes and the alternative broths.

I usually purchase a cookbook because I am interested in most of the recipes. But with this cookbook, every single recipe will be on my dinner table! I am a wife and mother of three boys. I cannot wait to prepare the dishes for them.

This book has every recipe I could've ever imagined. I even love the sample menus and how she teaches you how to make sauces, seasoning mixes, etc from scratch. No other cookbook I've come across included nearly half of what's in this book. I now have my cooking Bible! Thank You Ms Robbie and especially Tim for pushing her to share her receipes with us.
